Saying Goodbye to Herman

Post by callahanoffroad »

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been posting lately but its been a weird year!

Long story short I got a new car, well new to me anyways. It's nowhere near as cool as my old Volvo but it only has 92,000 miles. Its a 2010 Ford Edge Limited. The deal on it was so good that I couldn't refuse it.

Here's a picture!

Anyways, I just dropped him off at his new house which is about 100 miles away from my house. So I got to go on one last little road trip before saying goodbye.

Here's a pic of me and Herman getting gas.

I hope that his new family is as good as I have been to him, and I suspect they will be. Which is exiting!

What was really surprising to me was that I got full asking price and he sold within 24 hours of posting the listing.

I think what I'll miss most about Herman is the great seats, the classic boxy styling and the amazing community that is MVS. While I can always come back to the family anytime, and I definitely will still stop by to give my $.02 on some repairs, it feels a bit like graduating high school again. You know you can always see your friends again, but it'll never be the same. Of course that's my fear talking. I'm hoping in the future to be able to buy another Volvo, but we'll have to see where the wind takes me. Maybe next time I can get something with a turbo!

So from the bottom of my heart I want to thank the entire MVS community for all the years of support and guidance that I've received to keep both of my Volvos going. You are all the best.

So for a little catharsis and to share how cool this car was I figured I'd share the listing that I wrote (I am a writer after all), and the pictures that I took for the listing. I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed creating it.

1995 Volvo 850 Base - $2500

255,150 miles

This is one heck of a great car. Perfect for someone who loves classic boxy European styling but wants all of the modern amenities. Dark Green with dark charcoal/black leather interior. Rare manual 5 Speed Transmission. This car is also a unicorn as it is one of only a few ‘95’s that came with the Volvo Variable Intake System. Sure it’s not as powerful as a turbo model, but the variable intake has a fatter power band than later models. Well loved and meticulously maintained. I am the third owner of this fantastic car. Car has been located in the St. Louis metro area its entire life. Tons of recent repairs. All Stage 0 maintenance has been performed on this car. New timing belt and water pump in 2019. Comes with the roof rack which can be use to haul tons of stuff from large ladders, to drywall and plywood sheets. As a 1995 it does not require emissions testing, and the ECU is a simpler more reliable style. Passed Missouri safety inspection in August 2020. Starts up and drives perfectly every single time.

The Good:

Recent Maintenance:

Fresh tires
Plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
New Front suspension. (struts, springs, control arms, ball joints, wheel bearings, etc)
New steering rack in 2020
Fresh air filter and oil change
New upper and lower radiator hoses, overflow hoses
Timing belt and Water pump changed and serpentine belt in 2019
New cat-back exhaust in July 2020
New radiator winter 2019
New radiator fan summer 2020
New axles summer 2017
New clutch 2017
Replaced cruise control module
Too much more to list

Upgrades:
Snabb Short Throw Shifter
Poly Upper and lower torque bushings
Updated and enlarged PCV system

Comes with tons of extra spare parts, alternator, a/c compressor, axles, and more.

The Bad:

Needs some side skirt paint
Dash wood is peeling
Headliner is not perfect
Needs a thermostat

Well sometimes you just have to move on. We will be sorry to lose you and your posts, but hopefully we will hear from you from time-to-time in the future. Like you said, you have learned a lot over the years and been a great contributor. Glad to hear the car has moved on to another caring home.

Good luck and maybe we will see you back in the future with another Volvo!

Neil.

Ryan, we'll miss you. Thanks for all the documentation you've written over the years.

Used car prices are very high right now because of Covid-related problems with new car production. I'm happy you got your asking price for your awesome 850. It is worth every penny.

Check back in and let us know how you're doing, and take care.

Matt

See you around Herman. Be careful with that focus, you can get stuck off roading, depending on the depth of field.
