Re: Red Battery light came on today
I will clean the B+ connections, incidentally the only thing I did between it not working and then working was to pry off the red plastic cover on the alternator B+ connector with a long prybar........maybe that agitated it enough to improve the connection?

More likely that the brushes in the regulator are EOL and re-made contact.
I’ve become a big fan of having this stuff rebuilt rather than buying new junk. Even Bosch rebuilts are crap now.

I think it's probably something simple like that. I'll get some new brushes and bearings and rebuild my spare now in the meantime. How difficult is it to get that pulley clutch thing off?

Nasty, but the tool comes free in the tool kit with Willow Green XC if you can find one nearby.Blacklab467 wrote: ↑03 Mar 2021, 07:35 I think it's probably something simple like that. I think Wisechatmgr and I both stood on the alternator to counter hold my 1999 pulley, and neither of us is Twiggy. Watch out for LH threads , too.
I’ve got the real deal 20 minutes away....

Yeah, I might take mine down to the AE today, don't really want to buy that tool for the pulley and need to pick up some brushes and bearings. That Willow green XC includes a lot of service items that I wouldn't even have to think of for 10 years!
On a side note, I lost a ton of faith in my local Volvo indy today. I went down to pick up some Volvo Haldex fluid because I am going to replace my Dorman pump with a Volvo one this weekend and he told me they just run GL 5 75W90 synthetic in the Haldex AOD........yes you read that right! They use it everyday in every year and vehicle that comes in for a Haldex service! He said that if you pour them both in a glass jar they look almost exactly the same.........almost.

At 140 000 kms it may still be good for 2-3 years but it's getting old.

Possible.

This is just absurd. That’s the same logic as saying that “CH3COOH, C2H6O, and H2O all look the same next to each other in beakers & thus can be used interchangeably... “
At -30F check 75/90 vs AOC oil. Big difference! Man, I hope you aren’t heeding their suggestion
Edit: these customers receiving the 75/90 in their AOC must be getting annual pump replacements at $1000 a crack!

Yeah I can't imagine putting gear oil in the haldex, especially with how small and fragile the pump is. I will have to order one from FCP and wait for a week before doing that job.
The good news is that I put in my new used alternator and no more battery light! The one that failed had an aftermarket voltage regulator and the one I got from the wreckers was OEM so I feel better about having that in there. CEL went out also and didn't come back after a few cycles like it usually does.....I wonder if the voltage was wrong or something with that old regulator that the car didn't like and threw on the CEL?

Good tip from Oragex on removing the radiator fan to get the alternator out also, it was quite a pleasant afternoon job!
