1996 850 T Wagon Low Miles

Post by MrBreeze »

YV1LW5729T2217341

Can someone help me decipher this VIN? I am trying to buy this at auction this week.

Supposed to be a 1996 850 Wagon Turbo with only 78K miles, does the VIN support this info?

Thanks in advance!

YV1 = Volvo cars
L = Platform 80 (P80)
W = 5 Doors ( Wagon )
57 = Engine: B5234T
2 = Emissions: KOD: 40,EM E,EM G5.
9 = Security code, calculated from the other digits.
T = Model year: 1996
2 = Factory Code: Belgium, Ghent Plant VCG 22
217341 is the Chassis number.

It is a North American VIN number. North America did not get the V70 until 1998.
The only North America P80 5 door in 1996 is the 850 Wagon.
The T on the end of the engine code is Turbo.

That VIN decoder is probably generating fake data ,TTBOMK Volvo doesn’t encode model info inthe VIN other than what Rick outlined above

If I recall correctly Volvo 850's that year came in: GLE, GLT and Turbo. There was also R and special edition pearl white 'Platinum' option.

The LE (or NA base spec) I don't believe came as a turbo option. It was an NA engine with around 168 bhp and cloth interior. This one you have shown has leather and sunroof. So not sure what it is. Shame you can't see the rear tailgate. The Turbo was 193 bhp.

Wikepedia is a little flaky on this. The 2.5 turbo engine became the GLT the next year (97).

The interior is superb with nice seats from what we can see. car has the 5 spoke wheels which look good what we can see. There does look like a possible ding on the RH front door and fender.

Good luck!

Neil.

96 Turbo was 222hp 2.3.

LE... I can't think of any Volvos with that trim designation. That's a Toyota trim.

Your VIN decoder is junk. Trim level is not encoded in the VIN.

The car's trim level is a 850 T-5 or a 850 Turbo. Can tell that from the engine code but cannot narrow it down to one.

Are the badges still on the rear of the car?
