I thought it would be fun to hear from people who actually bought a new P80 when they were on the market. Post here if you have fun stories about what you did with them.
I'll start with our 99' V70 XC which we bought in September of 1999. We got $5000 of retail because the 2000 models were coming in. We ordered a nautic blue one with two tone taupe interior. We also ordered it with a dealer installed factory hitch! More on that later.
So here are some photos of our first weeks of ownership. They are crappy scans because at the time we were still taking photos on 35mm film
Have you bought a brand new P80?

Nope. We are the second owner. Purchased new in a Dallas suburb, dealer-maintained, sold to us through a Denver auto broker with 60,000 miles and shipped to Montana in 2001-ish.

I was so close to buying a new one back in the UK in 1999. I had gone to look at a V70 D5 auto (diesel 5 cylinder) to replace my 1992 940 HPT wagon special edition. The V70 diesel was a great car with loads of torque aligned with a great auto trans. It would manage about 45+ mpg (UK mpg) easily. I was all ready to sign when I saw a used red V70 T5 that was 1 year old. I recognised the car as having belonged to a local prestige taxi company we used for work. It was the owners wife's car. They changed her car every year. It only had 10,000 miles, a stick shift and was mint. They really looked after their cars and always dealer serviced. When I asked how much the answer was about half new price. I guess you know what came home with me. It was a full fat Euro spec 240 bhp motor and went like stink. I was so sorry to sell it when moving to Canada. Car was still mint and was detailed every 2 months.
Came down to earth on coming to Canada when a piece of junk in the same color at the local dealer with scrapes on paint and looks of general neglect. It was the regular GLT spec and the wanted what I had sold my car for in the UK.
Your car looks great. Are those recent pictures or did you say they were from when you bought your car? Still love the color.
Neil.

Sort of new. Less than one year old at dealer with 15k on it. Someone was moving to a bigger city and decided they couldn’t deal with 5 gears in traffic.
Sales guy wasn’t too happy about Mrs Abscate test driving a stick, not knowing her history OGrady Bugstyat didn’t work, VW Busses , Quantum , Audi stick
She spooled up the turbo and said “ooohhhh, feel the power”
Paid 59% of MSRP, and it’s patiently waiting me to replace its cylinder head

Hi Neil, thanks for sharing your story with the V70 Diesel and the T5. I always thought that the Volvo Diesels were excellent engines and what a shame that they never sold them here. But it's all water under bridge now.scot850 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021, 20:20 I was so close to buying a new one back in the UK in 1999. Sounds like we have a similar history with you moving to Canada from Scotland and me moving to the USA from Germany at around the same time.
The photos were taken not long after we took delivery in late summer of 1999 in the office parking lot. Funny thing is that I left the company in 2002 and I re joined them only last spring, some 18 years later. Now I park my S70 in the same spot.

So that's what a non-bulging power steering reservoir looks like! =P
I bought a 2007 Dodge Caliber. First night owning it my neighbor proceeds to hit it with his boat on the trailer. I then spent nearly a month trying to get it right. F'ed up the passenger's control arm and steering, straight down the entire side of the car was a ~3" tall scratch with dark blue SUV paint.
The dealership had the car and I got to make the payment. =P

My dad bought my 2000 XC in Feb of that year, of course I was only 9 years old so most of my experience in it was growing up in the rear seats. He gave it to me in 2008 during my first year at college and it's been with me on hundreds of aventures ever since. If I could have a new car right now, I wish it would be a 0 mile version of mine with all the current modifications and upgrades. I don't usually get all ridiculous about cars being "more than cars", but at this point it does seem kind of like an old friend who's been there on the journey.
I did go and pull out the original window sticker:

My dad bought it new, it was financed through GE I believe when they were in that business. He gave it to my wife in 2014, still drives perfectly: 97: GLT, she loves how roomy it is. It makes my 3 series feel like a micro car. Eventually I think she will sell it to upgrade to something with more airbags but with only 210,000km it’s barely broken in. Such a well made car.

Spouses who will drive 23 year old cars and care for them make us richer,in many ways
My girls grew up thinking a 15 year old car is normal, one came back from college one summer saying” some people have to pay for their car every month....”

It’s so true, to her a car is appliance and she’s comfortable driving it. For me, it’s so easy to maintain, I’m averaging 1-2 repairs per year and they are mostly quite easy. I’m planning on building an extra garage so I can keep the car. It’s market value is very low, most ppl don’t appreciate these cars but at the same time as safe as it is I do worry about the lack of curtain airbags. I also don’t want to be jinx buying a newer used car that is full of hidden problems.
If an enthusiasts gives me $2k I might take it, I just hate the hassle of selling so it keeps on trucking. Just put new Bosch plugs, the old ones had 100,000km and were in excellent condition, I’m sold on double Platnium
