I bought another '00 V70XC recently at auction - 150k in *amazing* cosmetic condition, but it has been throwing a P0014 code—
“’B’ camshaft position - timing over-advanced or system performance Bank 1."
I've been searching the site and checking on things—
The oil looks good, the CVVT reads 4 ohms consistently. The CVVT also looks like maybe it's been replaced, as there are waterproofed electrical connectors tying the red solenoid wires to the car leads. I put on a new CVVT gasket for good measure, (the old one didn't have the little screen in it), but that didn’t change anything.
I currently suspect the timing - There is evidence of a sloppy timing belt replacement (nuts missing that secure the plastic splash guard under the passenger wheel well, broken tabs on coolant and power steering reservoirs, and white-out marks on the cams) and I wonder if the person who did it didn't do it correctly. For what it’s worth, the *serpentine* belt and its tensioner also appears to be *moving* quite a bit—kinda squeaking and jostling.
Attaching some pictures...and from what I can tell, the top cams and the crankshaft seem aligned correctly with their marks. But is the oil pump supposed to align with something as well? There is a *tiny* little dot stamped on the face of it which points at about the 10 o’clock position when the others are aligned.
Would appreciate input.

The cam sprocket is off by a tooth or two. They probably forgot to load and return the pulley to the marks

Is that the one on the top left with the adjustment bolts in the face? How to correct it?
I redid the white-out marks on that particular cam just now and took another pic (attached).
Am I to understand the oil pump cam down below isn't particular about any alignment?
I noticed a little 'arrow' on it which juts out a little; it points at about 2 o'clock when the crank is aligned.

The silver thing is the water pump and requires no timing mark alignment
We will find and link to the VVT timing video short;y

Could it be as simple as loosening the 3 bolts on the CVVT cam and retarding it slightly?
I was doing a search and came across this RobertDIY video—
Or is that impossible with the belt on?

Its a choice of either following the VIDA procedure exactly, then perhaps still having to hunt and peck a tooth, or using a tool to measure the cam flank angle and knowing exactly where it is off.
The VVT tolerance is +-1 tooth or it will code. It wont code immediately, you have to run it to fault through several cycles, then it will set the code on the next start

I seeeeeeeee. Is there a better instructional or video you can recommend? Or would you start by loosening those 3 cam bolts and rotating it to better align the white-out marks?abscate wrote: ↑31 Mar 2021, 09:24 Its a choice of either following the VIDA procedure exactly, then perhaps still having to hunt and peck a tooth, or using a tool to measure the cam flank angle and knowing exactly where it is off.

Ill find and link to the Volvo instructions on this. A lot of the videos are just wrong, many miss the recommendation to setup one tooth off from cam mark alignment.
