Wonky Instrument Panel

Post by Rhoni »

The instrument panel on my 2003 V40 Turbo has been acting wonky for a few years. At first, the gas gauge didn't register the amount of fuel in the tank on a consistent basis but it watching the milage and keeping the tank filled wasn't an issue. Later, the speedometer and the tachometer would sometimes work normally, together; or one would work but not the other. Now, the odometer doesn't always record miles properly nor the trip meter; the ABS light frequently goes on, and sometimes everything seems to work just fine! The dealership free diagnostic told me the ABS system had to be replaced to the tune of $1,200. ABS sensor, hmmm, yes, maybe. But maybe replace the instrument panel first and see what happens? Thoughts about this much appreciated :)

You probably have an issue with your DIM (driver instrument module), which is a fancy name for your instrument cluster. Check on the Xemodex website for diagnostic info. I believe Volvo had an issue with the lead-free solder on the circuit boards or something like that...

Thanks for your reply!!!
I went to the Xemodex site. It said I needed a particular part number for a 2003 V40 but the photo of the item doesn't match what I have. The photo for the item under V60 matches though. :?:

This sounds similar to issues I have been experiencing in the past week with my 04 1.9T s40. Do you find your cruise control goes out when dealing with (assuming intermittent) issues? I was also having issues with my car stereo, where it seemed like some off the speakers would go off or soft. It was the kind of thing where my speedometer would drop, along with all the other noticeable things, when hitting a bump. But I could smack my dashboard a few times and get it functioning again.
