Hi everybody.
I need to service some parts under the hood, nothing major. Just wanted some advice from you guys.
1. The power steering pump is on the way out. I am sure I will be capable of doing the job. However can someone point me to a replacement pump? The OEM is just too pricey. Is Bosch the OEM supplier?
2. Thermostat is stuck on open position, the car will reach operating temperature, however when driving on the motorway at speed the temperature will drop significantly, down to low 80C. Question is do I replace only the inside part of the thermostat or the whole housing as well? OEM?
3. The fuel rail is leaking at the pressure release valve - fire hazard I guess? Do I need to remove the fuel rail to replace it? Or is it the same type of valve as on the tyres? So can be just unscrewed and a new one screwed in?
Will follow up with the pictures soon.
Happy driving and thanks.

Before you think the pump is bad, make sure you have the correct Pentosin fluid - it's a shade of green
A pump can make noise - loose hose or wrong fluid, it can also leak a little near the pulley - not a problem
If the steering is heavy, there are many things that need inspected before looking at the pump
These pumps usually last long time, a used one can be a good choice. You need a tool to release the tensioner and remove the belt
Yes, Bosch/ZF makes it for Volvo https://www.fcpeuro.com/Volvo-parts/Pow ... ring-Pump/
Thermostat is difficult to replace. You can order from Ebay in UK the thermostat part alone for D5 engines (similar to the one for gasoline engines), or you can order the entire housing and replace only the part inside. Try getting a good brand, not a cheap one
For the rail valve, with cold engine release first the pressure (cover with a piece of paper), then use a long thin nose pliers and try to rotate a little bit the valve stem, see if it keeps leaking. Always work with a cold engine, warm engine has warm gasoline inside which keeps building up pressure even seconds after releasing pressure. There is a small T25 torx bolt under the valve assembly, and it has a seal that you need to lubricate with vaseline before placing back or it will get chipped. Spray the bolt with engine oil a few days in advance

I am sure its the pump itself. It makes a loud crunching noise when the car is started cold in the morning. My guess the pinion gear is worn out. Yes they do last a long time, I agree. The current one is the original from the factory, so 15 years and 300k miles on it. About time for it to start making noises. Other parts of the steering system are in good order.oragex wrote: ↑07 Apr 2021, 09:01 Before you think the pump is bad, make sure you have the correct Pentosin fluid - it's a shade of green

This is the thermostat I was looking at, I guess its from the D5 engines as it looks a little different from what is shown in the video.

I've taken off the fuel rail before, its not an issue to remove it if needed, just wanted to know if that was needed. And yes, working on a cold engine. Learnt from my mistakes alreadyoragex wrote: ↑07 Apr 2021, 09:01 For the rail valve, with cold engine release first the pressure (cover with a piece of paper), then use a long thin nose pliers and try to rotate a little bit the valve stem, see if it keeps leaking. I see what you mean, I was lucky myself not to get sprayed in face. There is a small T25 torx bolt under the valve assembly, the seal needs a bit of vaseline when placing back, but perhaps you already know. Spray the bolt with engine oil a few days in advance. it can be stuckStonedraider88 wrote: ↑07 Apr 2021, 09:17 I've taken off the fuel rail before, its not an issue to remove it if needed, just wanted to know if that was needed.
