bad control arm bushings - replace entire arm or just bushings

Post by thefisch »

Control arm bushings are cracked on our 98 S90 so they need to be replaced. It was suggested to me that it would be easier to replace the entire control arm (replacement comes with bushings) rather than just the bushings. Seems like the price difference between the entire control arms and just the bushings is not that much.

Don't have any experience on this so curious about opinions?

I thought about changing the bushings but don't have a press. I have used after market (rockauto, etc) control arms with success. Gets you a new ball joint as well. I don't drive the cars too hard but our roads (Maryland east coast) are not in great shape either. Two 1998 x70s turbos with 200K plus miles. Control arms probably have 30K plus on them now. I would do it again.
After market (Beck Arnley and others) range from $25 to around $50 dollars each. Lemforder from FCPEuro (lifetime guarantee) around $90 dollars. Shop around. Also order online from Advance Auto, pick up at local store and usually get 20 percent discount. Check for warranty. Fortunately the job is not too difficult. Good Luck.
