2006 XC70 axle frozen solid...is the car scrap?

Post by capnjim »

I am posting this out of frustration and not really expecting any answers.
I pounded the crap out of this thing for an hour. Its not moving.
So is it huge to change out the whole entire axle? The transmission has to come out?
I just spent 3k on the car and tried to do the bearing myself. I actually bent the retaining bolt pounding on it.(After pounding on a socket for an hour)
I saw one video where a guy used a 2000 ton press, 4 million pounds!! And it did not come out.
i guess its Ok I can't use the retaining bolt any more as its not moving.
Any last gasp ideas? i can't afford to spend thousands om getting an entire axle/bearing assembly installed for both sides.
Oh well....I only put like 8k into this stupid thing in the 2 years I had it.

I saw that video too. I had a right CV/Axle separate at the mid point while doing my control arms recently. I picked one up for $55 on eBay. It has 118k on it. Works great. I also went a little wild and picked up both knuckles for it as well. One for $40, one for $59. Wheel bearing included with one, ABS sensor and ball joint included with the other. All in real good condition and free shipping as well. I figured it would be good to have spares or just the knuckle that I could add new parts to while on my bench and swap when I need to. You may want to browse the eBay junkyard sales to get it back on the road. You can always swap them out for new later. And no your transmission does not need to come out. The axle’s just slide in.

Can you explain what part is stuck to what? Is it the hub stuck to the axle? Axle stuck in transmission?

The axle is stuck to the hub. You can see it right away in the video. i actually compressed a steel socket trying to bang it out.

I'd hit it with a liberal, gross amount of PB Blaster every 30 minutes for a day or two. Nuke it. Then heat.

If the hub is stuck to the axle, replace both with used parts. If you get a bad axle, then replace the axle. The replacement parts should disassemble easier than the current parts. The car is not scrap.

+2.. See if you can find a low mileage axle on eBay or at a local pick a part and an axle bolt as well. Get a used knuckle and mount your new hub to it. You may need another ball joint depending on your situation. Pull your axle and knuckle out as a whole assembly.

Yeah? An axle is not too hard to do? I read one thing said you have to pull out the transmission? Any links to axle replacement?

Look at the union between the Axle and the Hub. Did somebody put some Loctite there to quiet the clicking noise cause by the slack between the Axle and Hub. If so, is it red or blue?

Red is semi-permanent Loctite needs to be heated with a torch. Then one can knock the two apart.
Blue is permanent Loctite ... you are screwed.

There is an official Volvo filler for this application. Cannot recall the color but it needs heating also. The filler get installed only if a customer complains about the clicking.

I don't think it matters what kind of loctitie is on it. I was taking baseball swings with a 10lb sledge. I bent the retaining screw. its not budging. But, I guess to be positive, I totalled the retaining screw, but I don't think I need it.
