I like the S70 body style, front seat and even back seat comfort though it has limited leg room. The 99 has the curtain bags but has the ETM and 5 Auto. Would pay $1,250 and maybe even the $1,500 if it was here locally. Nice interior and exterior from the pics.

No 5 speed auto for ‘99. The AW55 was only for 2000 NA and R models.

All Volvo AWD's have their challenges. Even later P2 cars can have issues. Front and rear suspension failures (broken coil springs), expensive shocks in 4-C cars, early failure of lower control arm bushes, same issues with angle gear, lack of AWD servicing with oi pump failures, AWD control boards, axle shafts and wheel bearings (XC90).

Like all complex cars they have their issues. It comes down to maintenance or lack there of. Lack of parts for P80 AWD cars particularly at the rear sub-frame, fuel system and prop-shaft and rear brake back plates. To me that is the bigger issue of owning a P80 AWD car rather than the fragility of the AWD system. A lot of that fragility also comes down to lack of maintenance like angle gear and rear axle oil changes, transmission oil changes and the like. Even those who do not follow the change one tire change them all unless the tires are almost new.

As abscate has found, if you can get decent access to the rear of the car, you can work around the issues.

Neil.

I searched and found WIKI with the same info. In a way it's good as I liked the 98 transmission.

ETM = disadvantage

Let it be someone else's problem and wait for a 98 FWD if you like S70's (:
I suppose they will all be project cars sooner or later. Only one van left without curtain bag, everything else has it so though I favor the 98 S70. Having owned one, I would go with a 99 and up if purchasing that body style.

I'm a die hard manual guy (6 out of my 8 personal cars are automatic, but that's not the point :lol: ) but I have to admit, the AW50-42 is one of the greatest automatic transmission ever. I've been driving my S70 the past few days, and it's just awesome. The gearing, the smoothness, it's all just right. And on a 21 year old car with 254k miles!
Meanwhile the AW55-50 is the WORST transmission I've ever dealt with. It's just awful... the gearing isn't bad (not as good as the 4 speed, but it'll do) but the shift quality is just horrendously bad. Plus that neutral stop feature is just plain stupid... it makes traffic absolutely miserable.
I tried to do a control module adaptation on the S60 today and failed miserably. It's impossible to run through that properly unless you have a perfectly flat, smooth surface, no traffic whatsoever, and the most steady right foot ever. I got too fed up and gave up... not gonna be able to do it the way VIDA says (first step is accelerating to the highest gear possible at 1K RPM... I managed to get it out of 1st gear twice, but I wasn't able to hold it at 1k). Oh well, maybe the software update was enough to prevent it from throwing low pressure codes again.

When my 98 S70 T5 was around 235K miles I did a couple of WOT consecutively and the transmission had exceptional kick down but the rear main seal gave. Owned it for about 2 years and felt the same way about the AW50-42. One of the best transmissions out there in terms of shift quality. The 2.3 and AW50 combo could really sing or is that sowing machine or sow sing machine.

My 03 Odyssey is excellent also but they are known to be quite terrible. Has almost 223K so watching the WOT's :lol: (EDIT: When Passing). On 3rd full flush starting at 154K and still going strong on original trans.

I try not to drive my Son's 08 C30 with the M66 as 3rd, 4th and 5th pulls gets you to the speed limit in a blink. This without traffic of course.

Needs fuel line, I bet it needs rear axle drop. 10 hours on lift

Great Colour!

Been off road for a while, though. Yellow inspection was 2018, I think?
