a bit of a backlog but i had reverse progress over the weekend. While driving my zip tie engineering failed to properly secure a ballast for a foglight. The result was a pizza'd ballast and vanishing bulb. I got lucky that the mounts and the holders did not break though.

Then came the tire swap, i had presumed my used tires would last a winter up in an uninsulated garage but found sidewalls with deep cracks. Took a look at the date of manufacture on them and it said 2011 so i guess it was its time.

How lovely! Nearly $760 in parts and over 2 weeks of hard work nearly in the crapper. What did I do to my GT today? Blew a head gasket. Why? Because i used a semi-generic coolant thermostat. Going to buy a new thermostat and baby this car. Going to save my money to buy a post-88 740 wagon, 94-95 940, or 03-05 Honda civic before I go blowing money on a head rebuild. I still like the car. Going to keep it. As a matter of fact, Im going to record a feature and walk through video tomorrow.

Didn't this thing have questionable wiring at the rad fan relay? Was it like that when you bought it?

Correct. And not questionable. Straight up not connected. It was nearly broken off on IN pins 1&2 and the harness for OUT pins 1&2 was not there when I looked at home. I bought this car from one of those many Mexican roadside dealers.

It's highly possible that it over-heated previous to your ownership, and that was the cause of the HG failure, not your choice of thermostat.

When we bought my wife's '97GLT, we soon noticed that the fan wasn't functioning properly. It got warm/hot on her once before we fixed the fan, and had likely had the same treatment from the PO. We fixed the fan, but later discovered a small HG leak that was pressurizing the coolant system (tested for exhaust gases in the coolant). Most likely due to over-heating a few times. We babied it until we got the '02 RN motor dropped into it.

I'd check the head/etc for flatness, seeing as you're pulling it apart for a HG replacement.

Yeah the fan didnt work at all on my way home from the dealership. I questioned if that would affect the motor but i was only going about 50mph the whole way home because of my newbie status with a manual trans.

It would only affect things if it overheated. My guess is that it has been before you got it.
