Thermostat or water pump bad?

You are lucky, the 2001 used the thermostat alone, which is about $12 at FCPEuro.

(Later models use the whole assembly, which is $90-$100).

At that mileage, I'd replace the ECT too.

Re Water Pump, I have the factory Volvo WP with only 80K on it.
Still solid. If you ever need the WP, send me a PM.
All you need is the green gasket from Volvo or FCPEuro (a few dollars).

I use Green Prestone.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but we encounter that question today with our 03 Odyssey. 90 degrees weather and 2 miles into a 12 mile trip with a van full of furnishing and it's above the red. Pulled over, AC fan on, coolant level good, no coolant spewing so drove on. 2 mile before destination gauge drop to slightly below half which is normal for our van due to a radiator trans-cooler bypass.

Pretty fresh Rotella synthetic change and Havoline synthetic in transmission (complete flush) with a radiator trans-cooler bypass. Cooler is ahead of radiator. No engine lights and the car ran normal. Was thinking Thermostat the entire trip. After returning we think the impeller had spun freely on the water pump shaft and than on / working again. Waterpump is very noisy and burning smell right above it so parking now for sure.

Winter saw a very large coolant leak so parked it. Warmer weather sealed the leak and after a dozen moving trips in the last week in hotter weather it's finally time to repair it before damaging something.

Yikes. Modern engines with alloys don’t like overheats. You can ease the tension of seeing the gauge or Rex light with a no contact IR temp reader to map out temps in your engine so you can know where things should be

An IR temp reader sounds like a good idea, and a useful tool to have. What spots should I be checking and writing down? I know some spots are going to naturally be higher than other spots are, so how do I know if a spot is hotter than it's supposed to be, or cooler than it's supposed to be?

I'm thinking it might be the wiring since I was messing around in the area where the wires run under the intake manifold. I'm going to unhook the sensor and see it it changes. If not I'll move the harness around and recheck. Hopefully it'll be an easy fix without having to remove the intake manifold.

Most likely a water pump be bad. It is not worth buying a new one, if you need much cheaper you can find a used one here https://orbimotors.com/ they are selling engines and their parts.

I don't think it's the water pump. I've been in the car for over two hours and the guage has been fine, and I haven't had any text window warnings pop up. Even after an hour yesterday everything was fine.

I'm still thinking it's the wiring since I was messing around with the bracket on the back of the starter where the sensor wiring runs. I still need to change the starter out, so I'll look over as much of the wiring as I can when I have the old starter out.
