850 How much fluid is lost from AT when axle is pulled?

I'm going to replace the cv boot on my 850 AT. I've done the MT's, but not the AT before. So how much fluid should I expect to pour out when the axle comes out?

On the auto cars, there's usually not much fluid loss (a few ounces). It depends on how the car is raised as well. If you have it on one jack stand and the car is tiled downwards towards the opposite side, you'll have less fluid loss than if the whole front end is raised and it's level.

Great, that's what I was hoping. So there's zero chance that the whole reservoir will dump?

Yup, it's unlikely to lose a significant amount of fluid. If you lose a little, just to be safe I would check the ATF level, but it'll most likely be a negligible amount.

Now if you had the 'popular' 5-speed auto, when you pull the axle, no oil leaks out.........!

When i did replace mine cv joint and pulled passenger side axle out of box (right). I got honestly none out myself or so little i don't remember it.

It's not uncommon to get no fluid leakage either, I've pulled axles on these with no fluid loss. Then I've pulled others that seem to never stop leaking lol.

What they said - The way my garage is set up I always lose a little. I think it is level floor and then of course the front is always higher, up on stands. But YMMV.

Actually I just usually do a drain and fill (3.5 quarts ATF) when I pull an axle, because of other times having it drip and drip and leave a little mess. But as you said - zero chance of dumping it all.

Agreed with the experts above... I replaced the boots on my '97 855 in the driveway and there were just a few drops from each side when I removed the axles.

Otherwise I would have to pedantically argue that none is, in fact, lost.
