Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?
Saving it for you my friend! I will have about 3 x 1 gallon jugs for you once finished. Current oil is about 3 years old but has less than 1000km on it!

Well too good to be true. Have to say, that seeing how little the 'R' has been used in the last 2+ years and sitting for most of the last year, I was just hoping that everything would wake up and work. Needless to say most did with the exception of the RH front brake caliper. It has decided to stick, so that needs attention. Still has a loud whine (and not from the driver's seat) from the turbo that is more noticeable as I haven't re-activated the radio code yet.
So back out and get the wheel off and get the oil change done as well!

Funny, the whining in my R comes from both the driver's seat and the engine bay somewhere. The latter has yet to be tracked down, but I feel I know myself pretty well, and that's never gonna stopscot850 wrote: ↑16 Jun 2021, 13:52 Well too good to be true. Which means there's still a good 4,000+ miles left in that oil! Use it wisely, Steve!

Well the RH front caliper was toast. This is the 2nd one I've had where the seal had pulled out from the boot allowing water to get in under and seize the piston. I can push it out further and re-tract it to the same position but it will not go all the way home. Fortunately I had a good spare unit painted and stored in a sealed bag with dry sacks. Installed this and bled the brakes with help from our son.
While in there found the rears of both front rotors were bad. Only half the pad was doing any work by the looks of it. As these rotors have been on the car since before I bought it in 2011 and they already had a slight vibration at slow speeds it is time to change them. I've ordered a pair of Brembos and a set of Akebono pads. I'll fit them next week.
As the rear rotors and pads are now NLA from Volvo (one year only and 'R' AWD rear rotors and calipers), and only rotors are available, I think it is prudent to go in and have a look over and clean and check the rear brakes. Add that to the list!
Oil change and filter done. Found a slight oil leak but hopefully just dry gaskets that will swell with some use again. If not a bottle of AP-205 or Blue Devil will go in.
Need to drive the car more to see if anything else has gone bad with lack of use.

Check out Rock Auto for the rear brakes. That’s where I got mine for my 2000 R. They are Raybestos rotors and Pagid pads. I believe the only other company to make the rear rotors for a 2000 is Centric. iPd carried them at one point, but I haven’t checked in a while so I have no idea if they still stock them.

The rotors and pads an be found as you say in aftermarket products. IPD still have the Centric option. Have to say I don't like their new website. Used to only give options that fitted your particular car. Now they just give all P80 parts it looks like.
I do have a pair of Volvo rotors in my stash I bought a few years back. Not sure if I have the pads or have used them.
It is the calipers that are the issue as the rears as unique to the 2000 R. It took me a while to find them as re-built items. One in Vancouver and other in Montreal!
Thanks for the advice. Appreciated.
There is a guy up in Edmonton trying to sell a laser blue 2000 R. His ad comes up from time to time but he was trying to part it out as the engine had a rod knock. He has been trying to sell it on and off for 2 years or more.

Well 'm officially pissed! I bought a replacement set of rims for the 'R' (a set of 17" Volans) and probably overpaid for them as they could do with re-finishing or using as winter rims as they were bought for.
Why am I annoyed? Well the reason I bought them is because a Volvo mechanic said they were too wide (8") so were rubbing on the rear flexi hoses (AWD car). Taking him at his word I bought the Volans (7" wide from an 850R). Today I have had time to check the wheels and tires to photograph them to put up for sale. What do I find? The refinished Thor rims are not 8" wide but are 7.5" wide which are the same as the summer rims which have no issues!!
Closer inspection with better lighting and more time (and not -20C), and I found the following. The tire that was rubbing was only at 20 psi!! 2nd, the rims have balance wights mounted on the inside, and the rim that was worst affected has a huge balance weight which sits proud of the rear of the rim. Normally I only have sticky weights used. It looks like this has been rubbing on the rear trailing arm which is really close to the rim.
So I could have saved myself $400 and just had the leak fixed (car was standing for a long time and I hadn't noticed it was low.
Argh!!!
Oh well, as the saying goes, if you want something done right..........................!
I would add the following though for all P80 users if going for wider rims with offsets of greater than 43mm (standard for P80) is that you need to watch on AWD cars for the rims touching the trailing arm and flexi-hose, and for FWD cars watch for the parking brake cable, particularly if the hold back loop has fallen off from the training arm.
It may be worth using 6mm wide spacer rings to give more clearance.
You never stop learning............?!
Now off to check those rear calipers!

Here's a good hack if you're doing timing belt work. Y'all may know this already but a 5/64 drill bit makes a perfect pin to hold the piston in on the tensioner for the install. This is a Milwaukee bit.
