I like them because they are somewhat cheap to own and operate.

Why? Because it's f****n' bitchen. It is solid, the right size (855T), comfortable (new leather), fast enough, after-market parts abound, the Volvo community shares all the helpful information one could possibly imagine, they're easy to work on, logically designed, low key, and not unnecessarily complicated or over engineered to their own detrement like my GF's BMW. This is a vehicle of a higher order. Currently a Subaru Outback is the only comparable. I would like to see the electric Volvo.
Life is like a box of chocol- make that an engine compartment. You never know where the tubes go or how to rout a belt 'less you read the diagram on the underside of the hood. Do it right the 2nd time. So when all else fails, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Be good do good feel good live good.

The quality of DIY for Volvo is unmatched. I think it has to do with the low wanker factor of Volvo drivers.

It fits me like an old pair of blue jeans.

(Maybe a pair that's a little too worn now, but it's still comfortable. My wife has been at the "Oh god" stage for a couple of years, but unlike the blue jeans, it's too big for her to discretely sneak it into the trash.)

I 2nd this! DIY to the extreme! Wanna add fog lights? Prewired and predrilled! Wanna add an sc901 with center amp, 4 channel amp, and even an overkill 6 disc changer? Plug and play factory wiring, carpet and under-carpet padding precut, AND predrilled holes. Don't have power or heated seats? Prewired! They even provide an extra accessory harness against the inside driver side firewall for anything you'd like to add.
And I bet what abscate meant by DIY was the engine perhaps? And that's a whole nother ballgame. There's probably a reason they call the i5/i6 modular.

I like the styling of my V70. I have actually 6 vehicles right now (16 Cherokee, 05 Golf TDI, 98 V70 AWD, 99 Expedition, 96 Safari AWD, 93 B2200) but I originally liked the wagon styling, now I also like the comfort and ride quality. I like the look of the 14-19 GMC Yukon, but noticed if you compare the door handles and up to my Volvo, it's the exact same shape. I'm also a mechanic so all of my vehicles apart from my wife's Cherokee were bought needing repairs for under $2000.

I still drive one for sentimental reasons (was my fathers) and the fact that i can wrench and add whatever i feel. The car also feels fairly nimble and narrow which is nice when surrounded by some unpredictable drivers.

4 way disk brakes, leather interiors, bluetooth with an upgraded stereo, and upgraded headlights all add up to an old dog that feels like it learned most of the new tricks.

Because I can't afford to sell it!!

The amount of money this car has had thrown at it and time over the last 9 years I could have bought and repaired several regular good P80's.

For me the main thing is the seat comfort and driving comfort over long distances which is what has had me come back to these over newer Volvos. I had contemplated a XC90 but found the seats uncomfortable until I found the 'R' design seats. The local dealer sales guys told me they only ever fitted one type of seat so I was imagining driving one with a different one. So I bought a 4th Gen Toyota 4Runner instead and kept the P80 'R'. I contemplate selling it from time to time as I just don't drive a lot now that I'm retired so that is the likely reason it would go. Otherwise what would I go throwing money at??

Definitely not the 4runner, those are too reliable
I think that's actually true about the XC90 seats though, now that you mention it. The Sport and R design seats just have different upholstery. They're 2 tone, and I believe higher quality leather. The later R design seats also have the R design logo stamped in the upper backrest.
