99 V70 NA BASE 275K - Need help troubleshooting

Post by Paswonky1 »

My 99 V70 has been incredibly dependable. Hoping there are some techs here in the hive who can assist. I thank you all for your input!
Last week it started bucking a bit with a loss of power. Was able to get it home and it has sat there since. Looks to be running on cylinders 3,4,5.
Checked it out and here is what we found:
At idle (rough - but running) - disconnect #1 cylinder coil -no change
- disconnect #2 cylinder coil - no change
- disconnect #3 cylinder coil - wants to die
- disconnect #4 cylinder - same as #3
- disconnect #5 cylinder - same as 3
Compression - 135 all 5 cylinders
Coils laid individually on head with plug inserted - all 5 firing
Fuel rail pulled back - all injectors spraying strong - new fuel filter
Fuel Pressure checked - 44lbs
ECU swapped with identical number - no change
We are stumped. Is there a way to check voltage input at the 4-terminal coils?
Any input or insight is appreciated! Thanks!

Did you try moving the coils from 1 and 2 to the other cylinders to see if the behavior of your disconnect test changes?

ie: swap 1 and 3 coils to check to see if the "wants to die" behavior is now on cylinder 1 and the "no change " is on cylinder 3 now?

+ 1 with amblerman. Try swapping 1 to 3 and 2 to 3 to see if it makes a change. You may get a spark but it may be they have cracks allowing shorts. At least this way we can eliminate it being the coils. Does seem strange to get 2 bad coils in one go like that.

I would check on the fuel pump pressure. My 2000 (turbo R) runs nearer 60 psi, which is what I thought 99- engines all did.
