I'd never really read about Rhoads until a few months ago. Only knew he was Ozzy's guitarist and died in a plane crash. I'd always thought of it as a small charter-type crash, but it's not that at all. Much crazier.

For interesting musical history, consider the DVD documentary "Muscle Shoals". This is the story of a small town in Alabama that became a music recording center. Artists from Jazz to Rock were drawn to the sound recorded with the local backing musicians.
