Recently a friend and I have been working on a short ram intake to replace the airbox on my 1994 n/a 850. After installing this new intake, the car would turn over fine and sound/perform great! However it did throw a CEL, and after driving it for about 10 minutes, it would suddenly stop reacting to the gas pedal and die. After dying like this the car was unable to start (would still crank) until we reset the computer. We checked the codes on the obd1 box and got back code 1-2-1 in A2, being the MAF sensor. We had it cleaned at a shop since there was some noticeable build-up along the edge of the sensor. Once we re-installed the cleaned MAF the car would turn over great and the CEL was no longer there. We checked the codes again and A2 was reading 1-1-1, so after letting the car sit for a little we started testing it around the block and it wasn't having any issues. Drove for about 20-30 minutes with no problems (idled fine, engine was breathing alot better, seemed to be a success).
About 3 hours later I tried to start the car again and it would not turn over, it was cranking but it just wouldn't start. I reset the computer and then it was able to start again, I let it idle for 5 minutes then drove down the street (about 500 feet) and suddenly it died in gear. It lost reaction to the gas pedal and just died. I ran the codes and it still read 1-1-1 as if everything was fine. Checked all my seals on the intake and couldn't find any source of a leak, maf seemed perfectly fine since it was idling really well before and had no breathing issues while driving. After dying it refused to turn over and would just crank so I started researching to see what the problem could be. Went back out a couple hours later after doing some research, tried to turn it over and it started up fine and idled just as well as it was before while it was running. Does anybody have any idea why it might be dying on me like this? I have a stock airbox on the way to test if the new intake is causing the issue however when it runs it sounds exceptionally healthy with no apparent reason as to why its dying. One thing to note is that when it dies its as if the car went into neutral and just dropped to 0 rpm, no sudden noises or anything just loses power.
I hope you all have a great 4th of July, I'll be trying to address the issue all day and will report back any new information
