Timing belt and PCV overhaul time, any advise?

Post by Blacklab467 »

It's time for me to do a timing belt, water pump, idlers and PCV service. The kit on FCP with the Aisin pump and Continental belt comes with INA tensioner, is this stuff any good or should I go with the Volvo brand?
PCV service; what parts should I go with? There are various kits available but I'm not sure which one will have all that I'm likely to need. I don't want to have the car apart and have to order extra parts and wait for a week to get them and not have a car to drive. Is there any parts that don't come in the kits that will likely be worn out? The car has 290,000kms on it and I believe all the PCV components are original.
Thanks.

This is all the good stuff in Volvo Original Equipment brands. For PCV I have used the IPD kit. As I recall, it has Volvo parts except the hose clamps. It is hard to tell if you need/want to replace the oil separator tank until you get it removed. You may want to replace the accessary belt and idler also. I would update the PCV check valve to the new one with pinned end - not the peened end.

Thanks, I remember reading about that PCV part that can fail and ruin the engine. I am going to get the timing kit with the accessory belt and buy the idler and do it all.

All three are OEM suppliers for Volvo ... it is the same stuff without the blue and white Volvo box.

Buy a new throttle body gasket so you can clean your tb at the same time. I also wished I had replaced my thermostat and ECT while the intake manifold was off, it was a small pain to do it around the manifold the next week. I wish I had replaced my voltage regulator while I could see it even though it is functional.

To clear my PCV I had to drop the oil pan to rod out the clogged galleries in the pan and block, you might have to buy an oil pan o-ring kit from FCP that comes with the red permatex gasket goo. And then when i had it in my hands I could see the screen in the oil pickup tube was damaged so I had to buy that too, you could buy one and send it back if yours is fine.

I used the IPD PCV kit, which has everything you need, it even contains the expensive water jacketed vac hose. No regrets on spending the extra money for that hose. And it came with the updated check valve in the banjo bolt.

A word of warning, only use volvo rubber hoses, i purchased a PCV "kit" that was meant to be genuine volvo, it might of been a honest mistake but one of the parts was not volvo and after it failed i matched the cast markings on it to a Uro part i had but didnt use. (yes i bought the Uro kit and didnt use it after reading reviews) Make sure all parts are in a volvo bag if not buying from a volvo dealership.

I don't know, who makes the t-belt, but it appears slightly different than Conti. Also Conti has geometry issues, it "walks" on the pulleys. Aux belt is definitely not Conti: it is not stretching well enough and puts a lot of stress on PS pump.

Lately I refuse to buy INA aftermarket: bearing and casting quality dropped through the floor. "Same" INA tensioners sold in blue boxes were of higher quality when I got them last time, like 2-3 years back.

Thanks guys! I generally prefer to pay the piper and get "Volvo" branded parts after being dissappointed by other brands. I guess I'll buck up and get OEM for this job as well.

Where them "INAs" eBay counterfeits? Nowadays you need to look at the source as well as the name on the box.
