Vent Direction Switch

1998 V70 FWD non-turbo

The selector switch does not change the direction from which the air flows when turned to the various settings. The knob itself clicks into position however, it does not change the direction of airflow.

The temperature change knobs work and blend the air appropriately.

Please advise on the switch fix. Thank you.

That’s the electronically controlled part of the manual climate system. You’ll need to read codes from the control unit to see what is up

Thank you. I hooked up my code reader to the car the only thing I came up with was an evap code. Obviously there is a different way to read the code you referenced. Please advise on that process. Thank you.

As I remember, MCC controls flaps by bowden cables only (excepting recirculation flap), no electronics there.

The manual system has both. The Bowden cables control the temperature blend but the air distribution is controlled by damper motors like ECC

Unless you have a something like Vol-Fcr software and connecting cable it is unlikely it will read MCC/ECC codes. Most generic readers don't read that level of detail.

I would help but no idea on the workings of the MCC unit other than knowing cables can come loose either due to connectors breaking or cables seizing. I would suggest looking under the dash and have someone move the knobs and see if anything moves.

From what abscate says if there are servo motors those do fail. If they are similar to the the ones used on the ECC system then you can remove them and see if they are operating. Just remember to check how they were set when you remove each motor.

When you first turn on the key does the MCC flash for 20 seconds?

The Pre-Ford ECC & MCC have a self diagnostics which can be accessed from the control panel. I don't recall the process but when done, it will flash out the error codes on the MCC control panel. We did not get a lot of the MCCs here in the United States. Somebody might have better luck searching the Russian and European websites for the MCC error code retrieval process.
