Brake pedal low when running, normal when off

Post by Herb Goltz »

I just noticed that my 2004 Volvo XC70's brake pedal was suddenly low when the engine is running-- it feels normal when the car is off . It was fine yesterday-- I drove 200 km of highway yesterday with no issues.

Any ideas about this?

Check the brake fluid level and for crud at the bottom of the brake fluid reservoir.

If low: Top off then pump the brakes with engine running. Check to see if you are losing fluid.

If it was real low, reservoir empty, you might have air in the system.

If not losing fluid: With the engine off, put your foot on the brake pedal and press. Does it slowly sink to the floor?
