99 s70 not going into reverse after radiator change

Post by StupendousMan »

I have a 99 base model Volvo and the radiator was leaking. (checked and filled up my atf) changed it and the tyranny was running rough. So I drained the atf and filled it and checked the level. It goes in drive fine but now I have zero reverse (it acts like it's in neutral). Wondering if I something electronic was disconnected? I checked the pnp and it shifts (had someone in the driver's seat and shift it). No idea... Any thoguhts? No error codes....

Assuming you didn't knock anything out of place, first triple check the fluid level. Try moving the shift lever slowly between N to R and R to P to see if the car moves. If you are unable to track it down do a complete transmission fluid flush in case coolant got into the system. Use a Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF.

I apologize but my experience with transmissions is limited to maintenance.

Besides the level check, as mentioned, check the PNP making sure it is inline with the position of the lever and not in between. Again, slowly row between R n N and R n P to see if the car moves in reverse.

Could you have introduced small chucks of greasy dirt debris? Flush the entire system if you have to.

Below are two videos. The first is for concept and clarity. The second shows using the tube from the transmission rather than inserting a tube from the radiator as in the first video. Attach an appropriate sized tube to the line coming from the transmission. I prefer this method but the other way you are flushing the radiator's transmission cooler cavity also.

Thanks! Get video! (both are the same thoguh?). I have done flushes before (jeeps) first time on Volvo... Seems like the same idea... Let the pump do the work

Yes, both are the same just a matter where you allow the fluid to come out. Whichever way you are comfortable with in terms of less chance of a mess and whether the flow is from a top or bottom hoses besides whether you want the transmission cooler in the radiator to be flushed. Basically the same just be sure that the O-rings and clip are replaced.

On our 03 S80 T6 the previous shop or owner had used old O-Rings and sheared it flat when putting it back. The clip was also broken so the hose popped one day when my Son took off from the house. I ran after him following the fluid trail. That car also blew a lower radiator hose . Again, leaving for work and a trail. Thanks God we got good providence both times and the car was okay!
