Please give more details for understanding your Volvo problem.
Where do you see sludge?
Is the gauge indication overheating?
Have hoses leaked?
What does the oil look like - Chocolate milk?

IF it is both overheating and you have sludge, either oil or ATF is mixing with the coolant.

This could be as simple as a new radiator needed, or a new engine.
