850 gas tank straps

Post by vovo850 »

I have to vent/rant..
How can something so simple be screwed so bad by the engineers.. Volvo must have hired some VW engineers for this car..
Who the heck takes 2 straps holding a tank up and use 1 anchor point for both straps.
In what world was that a good idea?
It should have been easy to do this job, but not for me. I'd rather take my f250 tank down full of gas than do this again.
Still can't get the long bracket that angles from back drivers side to mount like it should.
I had to use one of the outside 2 holes to mount it. No amount of tugging, pushing and lifting was going stretch that
strap the 1/2" I need to mount it proper. Even the short one didn't want to line up without a fight.
Oh and why the heck did they use welded on nuts for the bumper bracket supports..
That crap was rust welded and no way to reuse those when you have to drill the bolts out.
Well I managed to save one hah.
God I love the rust belt..
ps: the youtube videos showing bumper replacement are deceiving too, if you live in the rust belt expect a battle.

Welcome to the world of salted roads or like here where they spray liquid death (de-icer) on the roads. I recall the battle with the tank straps on a V70 I had for a while. I wish I could remember how I eventually got it to work but a lot of engineering encouragement words were used! :o

Could be worse, could have been an AWD tank!!!!!!!!!

For a rusty reason (i will stay polite) i had to replace the fuel filter, and hoses were sticked on both side. I had to move the tank a bit... 'till down to rebuilt the line tank-fuel fi side... Yes i confirm, this is a really crapy job... Next time i will install 2 brackets.

You have to use heat around rusted fasteners.

Heat reverses the Fe + O2 -----> Fe2O3 + Heat that we abhor.

I always think using heat around a plastic fuel tank is a great idea. Never liked my eyebrows or hair anyway!

I’ve become a big fan of my little oxy mapp. It gives a pinpoint flame that is much easier to control than propane amd heats in 1/3 the time.

Yes, you have to be careful around plastic and gas tanks. Petrol tanks are ok , though.

I like this for some tight spots; pencil flame capable of getting way hot if need be.
