06 XC70 RH front marker light replacement

Post by scot850 »

For those already in the know I think I can hear your butts puckering at the thought of changing this!

My son's XC70 has hardly moved this year since he started a business which has him working from home with us. Decided it was time to get it out of the garage as we have sold my wife's car as we were not using it and like the other cars was just sitting costing money.

Anyway, it was due a service but was overdue the AWD (Haldex) service. It had been flagged as an issue about 2 years ago as running hot (failing). As the car is 16 years old and with 112,500 miles on it we decided we would have this done. It was meant to be done last year but due to an issue at the dealer it did not get done.

New dealership in Calgary which is partly owned by the exiting dealer but the one good service advisor moved there to the new place so booked the car in there.

Annoyingly we were in a rush when picking it up as my son had a conference call to go to so he headed off while I sorted paperwork out.

That was when we found that one of the marker lights was out. I thought it was one of the turn signal bulbs on the fender near the door. Didn't realise there is another tiny bulb on the side of the main turn signal which is part of the headlight assembly.

I was going to have the dealer change it (smart move) as it was there but my son had already gone.

When I got home went to change it and discovered which bulb it was. Pulled out hand book and it states. Turn plastic housing. remove bulb and replace.

Reality is:

1) Especially on the RHS you can't even see the bulb or holder. To get to it you have to remove the washer bottle filler tube, (Torx T27) and pull it out. Now unless you have hands of a baby access is almost impossible.
2) Removed the top of the ECU case to give a little more room. Still could not see the unit.
3) Fought to get the turn signal bulb out and with a small mirror I could just see the end of the marker light 'flag' for the bulb holder. It is a 4" long or so 3/4" wide thin plastic flag which you are supposed to turn 90 degree CCW and then remove. Needless to say, old plastic so it just broke off the first 3/4". At that point it is impossible to get to. Not sure you can even see where it goes to re-fit it either. Turn signal is bad enough!

Lots of cursing and put everything back with hands nicely grazed.

Thought that I could remove it and replace using a spare housing. No you can't. Another Volvo dumba$$ design. Holder is hardwired into the harness!! you have to replace the whole harness!!

I will forget this for now and plan to remove the headlights (another stupid design requiring bumper to be removed) to polish them due to oxidisation. I will swap the harness over then from a spare headlight I have.

I will also change the LHS one while in there!

People with large hands may find a pair of right-angle pliers useful.
Just be gentle, don't squeeze too much.
Use these pliers gently like your fingers...

Thanks for that, however that is not the marker light. That is the turn signal bulb which is relatively easy by comparison.

Once you have got the turn signal bulb out of the way, the marker bulb is hidden to the back of the hole the turn signal comes out with a long plastic flag on it. I tried long pliers on it and that is how I broke it. It puts too much pressure on a small surface area on the brittle plastic. Even f you can get it out, you cannot see to put it back in as you are working in your own view-space.

Thanks all the same. I will do a write up with pictures when I remove the headlights to polish them.

I ran into the “P2 snake” taking the washer fluid reservoir out. It just fell out, it took a few minutes to realize what is was and where it came from. Volvo really jammed a lot of components into that right front corner.

If you don’t replace it your vipers won’t work , and you may get an unwanted rattle.
