Hello All! New owner of a 1998 Nautic Blue V70 AWD...

Post by JHop »

Hello Forum!

Wanted to say "HI" to the group...just drove a 98 V70 AWD up from Marco IL FL to Chicago IL over the weekend and am getting to know the car.

The Skinny:
71K Miles (not a typo)
Nautic Blue/Tan
1 Owner, all service records (And the Monroney Sticker!) - Tons of work done exactly when it was needed...probably could use a torque tube bushing...
Lived in FL all it's life, garaged in A/C (paint, seals and interior are incredible)
Will be the "other car" for winter/errands/etc.

Looking to add rails/rack, wood wheel (XC SE), GROM BT...just slight upgrades and tighten it up a little. Have some 1998 V70R wheels I will probably refurbish and slap on there...some jewel headlights... Looking forward to learning more about these great cars. We had a 2000 V70 SE years ago and really liked it, so back into the fray...

Very nice! Rare to find gems like this at the low miles.

Double check all the rubber hoses and related things, because sometimes age will do damage, even with the low miles. I'd do a couple transmission fluid drain/fills, and if your AWD system is still functional (should be at that mileage), have the bevel (angle) gear fluid changed.

Hope you get many years and miles out of it!

Welcome and what a beautiful car. Condition is amazing!

There are several issues with the AWD system and if you are getting any clunks or knocks we can enlighten you where to look.

Hi Neil! Thanks! The “thud” happened mainly when backing off and also when hitting the acceleration on the highway…with cruise on and without. Around town I don’t think I feel it. It almost feels like a highway expansion joint, which originally for the first part of the trip I thought it was, then I started paying more attention. So, yes any guidance would be great. Once I rearrange the garage a bit I’ll get it up on the lift and start to check it out.

The 4 places were a clunk can happen are:

1) Engine mounts: Check top and bottom torque mounts as the bushes fail. Note the lower is NLA. IPD does a poly-bush
replacement. Also check the RH engine mount/pad under the crank pulley for separation.
2) Prop-shaft: Check the front joint (fails due to proximity to catalyser), center support mount bush. Not easily replaced. Colcorado
Driveshaft are the goto on this.
3) Viscous Coupling: Check the casing mount at the front of it under the RHR passenger floor. It fails and causes a clunk.
