1999 s70 Evita ignition keytumbler problem

The problem is the keys are coded to the car. Abscate said in one of the earlier posts he is having problems with the OBDII talking to the system that operates the keys so programming is an issue.

Hmmm. My understanding of how these locks and tumblers work is incomplete.

This Dorman kit shows all the tumblers are the same. Maybe the key code is selected by where they are set in the lock cylinder? Once I get Evita apart, I’ll know more

More research. Have found the tumbler set for Volvo. The key is described as a 4 depth, I wonder if that is the number of positions per tumbler

That is basically how all keys work since they were all invented. The undulations on the 'keyed' part of the key moves up and down to move the tumblers to the right height to catch on the outer part of the barrel. Too high and the key won't be able to go into the slot, too low and they won't catch the outer barrel. So basically, you have to find the correct parts that give the profile of your key. A slow laborious task but do-able.

Still think new basic keys and gluing one with the key chip under the dash. You will probably still find it will out live the car.

Neil, that’s definitely plan B if I can’t get the newtumblers to work with the old key.

But, more knowledge gained.

The tumbler kits are no longer made and are “DWO” ...locksmith code for discontinued when out.

But we have a source for these....the door locks and trunk locks use the same tumblers.

There are indeed 4 distinct tumblers in use so rekeying will involve getting your tumbler choice right.

Off the specific topic but generally on topic:
I once read that into the late 70's Ford used only about 50 different keys for their vehicles. Several years ago this trivia came in handy. I was several hundred miles from home in a Ford church van. The pastor locked the keys in the van. I had my own set of keys including key for my 77 Ford truck. Worth a try.
Ir worked - problem solved in 3 minutes.

In the 80's and 90's in UK most Fords only needed a screw driver. My wife (partner at the time) had a small fast Ford called a Fiesta XR2. It was the most stolen car in the UK. Her's went missing 3 times in 6 months and was found on blocks with the alloys removed. She had a different key for each lock in the car (I think it was 4 or 5) as the dealer only swapped the broken lock out and charged the insurance for a full set. They then did that for another 3 or 4 cars and only used one full set. She complained and being a woman the B.S'd her saying they couldn't do anything about it. So next time it went for service I took the car in and slammed the keys on the counter, glared at the service person. He looked at this large angry person and said, " can we fix that and give you only one key instead of the 5? At that point my wife lost it and I had to take her out before someone got hurt!

Notice the Volvo 4 Track New Format note in the center of each image. "The VOLV key is used on construction equipment. The keys are all the same."

My wife always wanted her own construction equipment.
