Input on the value of a couple broken Volvs

Post by RMatey »

Hi, folks,

I’ve painfully decided to get rid of my two neglected babies. I’ve had the best intentions for them, but life finds a way to get in the way. And I don’t foresee a time in the near future when I’ll have the bandwidth to get them back out there. So I’m wondering if yous could give me some input on what I might be able to get for them, and if anyone here is interested in them. I’d very much love to see them go to fellow Volvophile (probably no one else would be interested in them anyway ;).One is a ‘95 gul 854 T5-R, and the other is a ‘99 laser blue V70R. Both have some goodies on ‘em, but neither is operational at the moment. Here are some more details about them:

The T5-R aka Bananaburger
The interior is in decent shape (with the exception of the ubiquitous P80 sagging headliner), the exterior isn’t really. Transmission is shot, which is why it hasn’t been driven in 5 years. Glovebox is out because I was tracking down a blower issue but tranny went out before I fixed it. I still have the glovebox and it will be included. I also have a spare power steering pump I was meaning to install that will be included, although if I remember correctly, I had come to the conclusion that I didn’t need it. The stock stereo had been replaced when I got it, and I do have a double DIN unit that will work in it (I filed down the rails that get in the way already) but is not installed. No original floormats unfortunately, but I do have the alcantara covered manual ;) Odo stopped forever ago. One of the titans is bent which is why there are canistos on it. I have all 4 titans and two extra canistos that will come with it as well. Koni yellows and Eibach springs (I believe, can’t remember at the moment) along with new hardware were installed shortly before tranny failed so should have plenty of life on ‘em still.

I feel prodigious shame that I never got around to fixing her up. I don’t need to tell anyone here what a unicorn she is; does anyone actually know how many T5-Rs, let alone gul T5-Rs, are still on US roads? But she obviously needs tons of work, so I just have no idea what she’s worth.

The V70R aka Blue Blazer
I picked this one up when the gul’s tranny died. The previous owner’s family was friends with a dealer’s family. This was that dealer’s wife’s car, then the person’s I bought it from. It has around 176k on it if I remember correctly. I bought it with ipd exhaust, then put in an ipd chip, got a rear spoiler painted and installed that, put in a Pioneer touchscreen double din head unit, and replaced the stock grill with the blue emblem egg crate style one from the XC. I still have the stock grill, and that will be included. Did some badge rearranging and still have the original badges that didn’t make it back on. Exterior and interior are in decent shape for her age. I replaced the timing belt and water pump, then the belt jumped on a little piece of rubber under the cam gear that got stuck between the belt and gear, and she hasn’t started since. I believe the valves are bent after the jumped timing, but I haven’t taken the head off to investigate further. I tried a lot of different things and that was the conclusion I came to 5 or 6 months ago when it happened. A few weeks before that happened, someone clipped the driver’s side mirror and broke it. I do have a replacement mirror and was in the midst of taking the shell off the old one and putting it on the new one. AWD system of course failed a few years ago, so I removed the prop shaft, but still have it and I believe all the hardware that will be included.

She’s not quite the unicorn the gul is, but she is rare and fun and in decent shape other than the motor issues. Again, no idea what she’s worth.

So I’m hoping yous could help me figure out what to ask for them. And if anyone’s interested, please let me know! Location is El Dorado County, California, which I guess is good info to know since you’ll need to tow ‘em.

Thanks so much for your time, all! I hope they’ll go to good homes.

P.S. I posted this here because I’m primarily looking for advice on what to ask for them, but if it makes more sense to post it in the classifieds, I can of course do that there. I just didn’t want to spam multiple forums.

Two fairly decent coveted models, with different audiences.

It’s about $1209-1300 to move a car from CA to anywhere else in the country.

Pricing as non-runners will be sparse since you can’t check the crucial things that cost big bucks

A nice cherry R will bring 15,000 on BAT, but a non-runner doesn’t get price anchored there. It’s easy to drop 15-20k on these to fix big stuff; we have an expert on this in Canada here.

I think you'd be very lucky to get $ 1000 ea. Paint's not good, interior's not good and the drive trains are bad. So what's left ?

There is a guy up here in Canada in Edmonton who has been trying to sell what was a fairly mint 00R like mine. IT has a rod knock and only around 90,000 miles on it. He has been asking about $5k for it which is crazy. Problem is I could get a replacement engine for probably $1500 CDN delivered. Once fixed the car could be worth $8-10k potentially. 00 year only 40 laser blue V 70R's were sold in North America. So fairly rare. The big issue with these cars is a lot of the parts for the rear end including hoses, fuel pipes and some of the sub-frame/suspension parts. I have just had an emissions leak less than 6 years and about 3000 miles after replacing a hose on the carbon canister. Car is garage stored and part was OE.

If someone wants AWD fixed the prop-shaft is about $600 at Colorado Driveshaft. That assumes nothing else is wrong. The other option is to swap to a FWD car completely like our friend bmdubya did with his and also fitted a stick shift.

The interior is not that great. It is probably worth more as parts as the cost to bring it do a good standard gets high quickly. I am so far in for over $25,000 CDN and I still have a car that goes wrong, but part of that is my fault for not driving it more.

The 850 is in the best color for a T-5R. The issues again is poor paintwork and it can't be run to see what else is wrong. Again you would need a low price and someone very keen to fix it including either a wrap or re-paint.

I wish you luck which ever you do. The guys in the US are best placed to advise on pricing in your market.

If you could find the parts to convert the 850 to a stick shift and get it running it's value would go up significantly. Hardest part is finding the pedal cluster for a manual and the associated parts need to do that. Then it may have potential to get a better price. Buffing the paint might get the panels to look better and make it easier to sell.

Should have added. Have you ever used vandsdismantlers near Sacramento for parts? If so how are they for pricing and service?

If you don't know them, they are a specialist Volvo and SAAB breaker, but looking at their website they have branched out to other Euro brands now as well.

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I really appreciate it. I've gone ahead and listed 'em for $1000 OBO each, or $1800 for the set ;)

Yes, and I can't recommend them enough. Love those folks! Good value, and they'll replace anything if you get it and it doesn't work. Been using them for years.

Glad we were able to help. Hopefully at that price they will be cheap enough for someone to take the task of getting them back up and running. Good luck with the sale, and sell the spare wheels separately. Parting out is the other option as it may make more money, but most folk can't be bothered with the hassle.

Also good to know about the parts supplier that you have used them and been happy. I dealt with them several years ago and they were helpful and knew their stuff. Prices were fair and shipping to Canada at that time not too bad. I heard from one person who found them unhelpful and rude. That seems an strange, but everyone can have a bad day!

I wish I wasn't on the other side of the country from that beautiful Laser Blue V70R. Surely it's cheaper to rebuild an engine than to paint a car that awesome color.
