ATF change out

Post by Mr. Detail »

I just re-read the instructions that came with my IPD ATF flush kit.
It speaks to removing the lower hose with green clip. I have a pair of ramps that I usually use for my oil changes so do you think that will help my cause? It seems hard to work on that from the top of the engine compartment.

I did it from the top using a technique called the "Gibbons method". It was very accessible from the top. Google it.

Save your time and do just 2-3 drain&fills. Rationale:

1. Only a part of ATF flow is directed towards oil cooler, everything else circulates internally, i.e. new fluid mixes with the old one
2. Cooler return line goes basically into sump, where your fresh fluid mixes with whatever is splashing there in sump
3. About half of the overall ATF volume is contained in torque converter, where your new fluids mixes with old fluid like mad

No point in messing up with Gibbons method. Just do drain&fill, a few times.

vtl, sorry for my dumb question here but can I assume correctly that what you mean by drain and fill is virtually the same as what I would do with a normal oil change. Loosen the metal plug for the ATF pan underneath, drain out so much and then just re-fill up top with that skinny funnel?

Rarely I see a car mechanic going that deep into the engine. Must be a reputable pro!

vtl, after removing the ATF plug is there a aluminum crush washer that needs replacement or can I re-use the old one?
