Help finding parts?

Post by Sheggies »

Hey so a few months back I bought an 1996 base model N/A 850 wagon with a 5-speed and a fair amount of miles on it (224k, now 228k). Now, I know these things can run forever if maintained right and the 2 previous owners (both old guys) did a pretty good job at that, a tradition I would like to keep. That being said, there are a few things which need to be done and I found finding some of the parts to be confusing, so I was wondering if the more astute 850 guys on here could help me find parts that aren't crap and/or overpriced. And keep in mind I am trying to DIY as much as I can (I'm a broke college student lol). Anyways, here's what I need:

Front CV Joints, previous owner informed me at purchase that they were going bad. Might possibly need some rear cv axles as well but I can't 100% remember (Edit: rear cv axles aren't a thing for this car, I'm dumb).

Exhaust Manifold, or maybe at least the mesh part before the flange, it's riddled with holes.

PCV System, mine doesn't seem too bad (the little pipe next the oil fill cap is a bit hard but when I did the glove test it barely filled at all, still probably a good idea to replace it as it's the #1 maintenance item most here recommend). Can't seem to find a great kit for my car though.

Door Moulding, two of the black trim pieces on the right side of my car came off after a camping trip, after that I pulled all the others off because it looked like crap with only some of them on. Needless to say I can't find any decent replacements online.

EVAP? Occasionally my check engine light will come on and my car will throw code P0455 for EVAP, that being said I cleared it and have since put 400+ miles on it with no further issues since I last saw it. Guy at the autozone recommended I get it smoke tested but idk.

Any links to parts or tips with doing these fixes would be much appreciated, I love this car and I want to keep it on the road for years to come.

Welcome Sheggies!

In pseudo random order

You can often repack and reboot Volvo axles if they aren’t too loud. The original ones are much better than the $100 from NAPA.

MVS sells rear CVS for FWD cars and installs them online. Just send me $100
( snark….you don’t have CVS on the back, no drive axles)

The mesh just protects the manifold, if it isn’t loud and belching exhaust you can run that

Door molding….hmmmm

Evap…you will have some broken hoses on the evap canister which are best found with a smoke test. That code takes a long time to set, so it takes some miles to learn if you found everything.

I've purchased a few things from this place in Atlanta. He often surprises me with the things things he has, new or used. I bought trim, I bought a used camshaft.

Check the MVS database for PVC job info. Ultimately, you may not need to replace the oil trap (black box which gets clogged) if you can clean it with degreaser and carb cleaner. But consider replacing some of the surrounding hoses and clamps.

I recommend volvopartswebstore.com as a great source for parts diagrams and hard-to-find parts which FCP doesn't have. Browsing their diagrams will get you a full list of what you need for this and any job.

I don't think it's the boot of the axle that causing a problem necessarily, turning feels a little "disconnected" and theres a bit of a banging sound when I go over bumps, so probably just a better idea to replace them outright but I'm no expert. And I also did kinda realize that there aren't CV axles on the back, still learning lol. :P

The mesh is definitely loud and is definitely belching exhaust, the car sounds like absolute crap, smells like absolute crap (especially when i'm inside with the windows up at a long stoplight) and I can feel the air coming out of that area.

As for the evap it would probably be a good idea in the future to get it smoke tested but it doesn't seem to be too big of a deal so i'll probably wait unless it's recommended otherwise.

As for the door moulding I should probably call some junk yards.

I bet I could get away with cleaning it and replacing the tubing, especially because mine doesn't seem too bad but tbh it's probably worth it just to replace it all and get it over with.

I'll check out that website too, thanks!
