98 S70 T5 muffler basics

Post by mar601 »

160K, have had the car since 98 and never an issue with the muffler but lately getting a purr coming from under the drivers side, which seems to get a bit louder every day. (a bit of a soft mgb sound).

I don't know a thing about the muffler system and just want a preview of what to expect and what usually goes wrong with it. Maybe after 23 years it may need total replacement? Are the common muffler shops good for it and maybe approx cost? I think I remember hearing the S70 exhaust was very robust and maybe it can just be patched? -- whatever, like I say know zilch about it. -- thank you

Best thing is to ask about if there is a recommended muffler shop to take the car to for inspection. Maybe catching it early it can be saved.

Based on what you are saying there are 2-3 possible options.

1) There is a portion of flex-pipe where the down pipe from the exhaust manifold turns under the car to the catalytic converter. Over many years of flexing they can fail. That can be replaced by a good muffler shop.

2) Also at the front the exhaust manifold to head gaskets can fail and the manifold to down-pipe. Based on what you say as to the location this may not be the case here but worth checking anyway.

3) The catalytic converter to the rear pipe is another failure area. The clamp holding the 2 together has 2 bolt that can rust through opening up a gap.

It is worth having the whole system checked over as the repair/replace may be affected by the condition of the remaining system. The rear muffler near the fuel tank can become badly rusted as can the rear mount at the tailpipe.

As to cost, there are various options, but none will last as long as the original. Muffler shops may have access to brands like Bosel or Walker. They are typical replacement aftermarket brands but life span can be variable.

Then there are performance mufflers that may be worth considering if you can find one made from T304 Stainless. T407/9 Stainless is no better than mild steel so not worth spending extra money on it.
