850 1996 Power Window struggles

Post by Teddy1975 »

Hi guys,

I bought some rust free doors for my volvo and they came with power windows. Somewhat annoyingly, everything had been taken apart by the seller, to sell in pieces I suppose, so I'm slowly putting things back together.

I've just tested the power window in the driver's door to see if it works before I install it on the car. It positively zooms down when opening but really struggles to go up while closing. I noticed that of the two nylon sliders at the bottom of the window only the green one moves freely on the rail while the white one is jammed in place. Could this be the problem?

I've put 12 volts from an 8 amps bench power supply directly onto the wiring to the regulator so it can't be a switch related problem, although I suppose 8 amps might be too little to drive the regulator properly.

Thanks in advance for any hints,
Teddy

The sliders should be able to rotate and move freely. Replace them and grease with silicon grease or hi-temp grease.

Also lightly spray the window channels at the back and front of the window with silicon oil. See how that goes.

Finally check the window guides are not rusted and swollen. The rear one is replaceable (the 98-00 V/S70 one can be used as I believe the 850 version is NLA). The only difference is the 850 uses a screw and the later one a rivet on the rear of the front door to hold it in place.

Hi Neil,

Thanks. I looked in VADIS and saw the front white nylon slider is held in place with a bracket, so I guess it's by design that that one won't move on the rail. I had the rear window guide out (actually it was loose, like everything else, when I bought the doors so had to screw it in myself) and it wasn't rusted or mangled.
I'll try to give the guides and channels some silicon oil hoping that will do it.

Possibly I am wrong, but I thought 850 and V/S 70 door mechanisms were the same. At the bottom of the window where it meets the window mechanism, there are 2 channels. In those 2 channels there is a green wheel in each that should rotate and slide in the channels as the window opens or closes.

The funny thing is that I have this funny feeling that as you say the 850 did have one of the 2 a fixed block.

The rear slide is fixed with a brass bracket, also on the manually winched doors on my 850.

I installed the two front doors in the car yesterday and I'm happy to say that with a fair bit of lubrication the windows are opening and closing pretty quickly and without any apparent struggling. The auto down relay I added to the passenger window also works so I'm fairly ecstatic :)
Now to tackle the rear doors.

Thanks for your help, Neil.

Well glad you found a solution! Well done and very satisfying I'm sure, Still hope to get back to Denmark in the future as I am half Danish. My brother lives near Helsingborg in Sweden.

Yes, it's satisfying for sure. Although, I've reached the point where I'm considering to save up to buy another, newer, Volvo. Possibly a V50, although that isn't a proper Swedish Volvo, more like a Ford in disguise. Perhaps a 2.0 diesel V70 '08 or '09, although they are rather expensive in taxes here, about 1000 USD/year. Just need something that isn't older than that, due to particle filter requirements for diesels here.

My current woes with the 850 are as follows:
I've discovered rust in the side panels under the kick boards at the rear doors and I'm not looking forward to removing them to see just how bad that is.

I lost the rear part of the exhaust while driving sometime last week due to rust and the car is belching blue smoke whenever I start the engine and every time I accelerate. Oh, and the ABS module just started acting up again.
Vehicle inspection is coming in March/April I think, by which time the exhaust and the valve stem seals must be replaced, if I opt to drive the 850 for another two years. With no garage, I'm not keen to try replacing the seals on my own, the procedure looks fairly complicated from what I've seen on youtube and the how-to's, and I can vividly remember how much of a struggle it was to change the timing belt when I did that, just before that engine decided to quit on me and I bought another used one with low mileage (which ran for exactly 10 months before it started to smoke).

So, I'm not sure if now's the time (within the next 6 months or so) to cut the losses.

What oil are you using in the engine? Maybe it is too thing for the older car and will cause more smoke.

At this point it may be worth trying an engine seal conditioner. It may help reduce the smoke enough for another year. Over here I would use ATP AT-205 if it is available (they have had production issues with Covid) or Blue Devil. I'm sure there is a similar product in Europe?

ABS module is repairable. Appreciate the shipping to/from Denmark may be high, but MVS member Matty Moo repairs them with a life time warranty.

A muffler shop should be able to add a piece of pipe to your system if it is just the rear part that has broken off.
