Grinding from front right side while turning right [Solved, posting for visibility]

Post by benpineapple »

Had some issues with my '06 V50, thought I'd share the odd solution. For the past 8-ish months I've been experiencing a grinding/whirring noise when turning right at low speeds. Issue progressed, got louder, and would grind/whir even when decelerating in a straight line. Issue would be worse in the cold, or when the car was cold, would get a bit better after a few minutes of driving.

Sounded like a driveshaft slipping, or some other type of driveline issue. I took it to a shop to diagnose and they wanted 3200 to put a new transmission in to fix the grinding. After doing some digging, I found people describing a similar issue on other forums, and that the passenger-side front motor mount (the one located under the coolant reservoir) could be at fault. For $75 and maybe 30 minutes of time I replaced the motor mount and the grinding went away. Motor mount didn't look totally shot, but the upper and lower section of rubber were torn, none of that grease everywhere like I would have expected.

Hope this helps someone else experiencing the same issue! Odd solution and not sure what the house exactly was, but I'm glad it's fixed now.
