1998 V70: Where is the tailgate light switch?

Post by sibir »

The wires from the light go to the driver's side, but I did not find the switch there. I thought it would be near the hinge. Any help?

The switches for any doors and the tailgate are built in to their latches.
According to the OM, it only comes on when the gate is open.

Hmm, you mean it would be in the door? As an engineer I would always put the switch on the stationary part (no flexing wires, less shock when slamming the door), but there I did not see anything like a switch. That's why I suspected the hinges to operate a hidden switch. I will look at the latch in the door (and probably break a few of these plastic fasteners while removing the cover), thank you!

You are obviously not a Swedish Volvo Engineer.

I have one of those BSEE things myself but even after the rigors of engineering school I could never have dreamed up a PCV system as complicated as Volvo created.

I think you think like I do, K.I.S.S. If it fails let it fail in a mode that, while perhaps while not optimum, won't shut down the entire process. I think that memo got overlooked while they evaluating environmentally friendly glues that don't actually stick.

In their defense - they do a lot of things really well.

Thinking a little more about it, I realize why they would put the switch inthe latch. It is the only place where you can reliably detect if the latch is properly closed! And that signal is probably used for more than just to turn off the light.

This is a very old thread. In all these years has nobody discovered where the switch is actually located and how to turn the darn dash warning light OFF?

It is a micro switch located inside the latch assembly inside the tailgate

More details here, this for 99 but I believe the 98 v70 is identical. There are chassis breaks on this part so order by VIN , be awary of resellers “ fits all V70s”- it won’t
