Are V/S/C70 DIM units all the same?

Post by scot850 »

Some may have read that I am going through the process of trying to resolve an issue with my 2000 V70R DIM unit that has gone bad with help from me.

I can only find one part number for Canadian pcb (circuit boards) on Vida and one for US. For Canada it is # 9451506 for US it is 9451505.

I dis-assembled a used DIM I have and can find no unique identifier or part number on the pcb. I can see from Vida that at one point there was a part number for the lower LCD part of the board.

Does anyone know if all boards are the same and that some cars did not come with the trip computer (controlled by the little turn dial to the lower right of the DIM on the dashboard)?

My memory is not great these days, but I think I read a thread several years ago that all cars have the ability to have this and it may only require the addition of the switch. Or does that need programming. If they are all basically the same then we may be able to try the Xemodex route with confidence.

Reasoning is that Xemodex claim they can do what Volvo do not offer which is to copy over the program from your own DIM to another used one as long as it is the same.

The cost is $375 (CDN) to do so. I looked at the economics but have decided to go with a new pcb as I cannot get a clear answer on a few issues. Price differential is not that huge as you still have a used DIM which is only guaranteed for the software transfer and you have to be 100% sure the used one you supply is 100% compatible. Also Xemodex are claiming to offer a service that Volvo says they can't do of reprogramming a P80 DIM. I know P2 DIM's can be re-programmed, but not 100% convinced on mine.

Cost of a new pcb is $560 + tax Canadian, then there is a programming transfer charge of $100 approx, + installation. The difference is you then have a lifetime warranty on the pcb/programming and effectively a new DIM except for the gauges.

Anyway. Now have to wait for 4-6 weeks as the pcb is on back order with Volvo classic.

$375 for DIM REFLASH IS a rent-seeking price.

No not yet. The problem is that as Volvo consolidate parts numbers, we are now in a position like this were what we are offered today may not be what was originally fitted. The new part is great until they go obsolete. Then trying to figure out what will work becomes much harder as then used parts are the only option, and how do we part number match?

I can buy a complete new DIM unit not for an 'R' but for a P80. But is it the same with the exception of the blue gauges? Does it have the trip computer or not. Issue is if you swap the gauges over you then break the warranty on the part you bought.

I have seen a whole new DIM from a Volvo dealer for around $450, but then the pcb by itself is $560 (CDN). How does that make sense?

I will post some pictures of the DIM units later for general info.

I sent him a message through another means. If he is not still swamped with work or on vacation he might join this discussion.

It would be great to get his view on this. Thanks for doing that Rick!

They buy a DIM and then charge you an hour of Labour to remove the PCB?

He is here and he works off information so give him what he ask for. Might as well publish the VIN number here. It is public information anyway. Anybody can get it by looking at your dashboard. I does not contain any personal information.

Sorry Rick, not being clear here, I mean they have the WHOLE DIM not just the pcb for $450, but there is no way to know what pcb is in it?
