Next up - I hacked up the front cover to accommodate the 850's tensioner.

In addition to the big chunk that had to be cut out, the small ridge of plastic has to be trimmed to allow the tensioner to swing up and down.

I did this with an old pair of aviation snips, but really a bandsaw would probably work best. Or a soldering iron. I just went slow and nibbled away at it, then test-fit it. Repeat ad nauseum.

Test fit the injector rail cover.

Now it's looking like 300 horsepower.

Occassionally, the world cuts you a break.

I found a brand-new timing belt set I had bought last year and forgotten about. It's for the B5234T but it'll fit, so it's going in. I don't have the seals for the CVVT hubs, so I just installed the idler and (loosely) tensioner.

You can see just how scungy the front accessory bracket is in this shot.

It seems that had I also purchased a new serpentine belt at the time as well. Bonus!

That's where I am now. The next step is CVVT seals and a new set of subframe mounts.

And TTY subframe bolts - can you believe it?

Thanks a lot, Volvo. Just can't be a normal car manufacturer, can you?

I think you'll want to revise your accessory belt routing a bit to the version with more wrap on the alternator.

Look HERE
'97 854 T5 - Manual Swap/M4.4/COP/NA cams/P2R Brakes/16T/ chassis bracing/ XC70 nose swap
'97 855 GLT - Hers. RN swap/16T/COP/VVT/exhaust/302s/Flashed M4.4/ chassis bracing/ 2 kid seats
'78 GLE - Waiting in the wings. Future whiteblock/T5 swap.

The Others- '83 TBird turbo, '85 Mercury Marquis LTS (1 of 134), '86 LTD Wagon, '81 Granada GL, '76 Beetle, '93 F-150 I6

Yeah, I know. It never ceases to amaze me how tall an engine really is, because its top sits so high up in the engine bay when installed.

The pictures don't really show it, but the plastic parts are all permanently stained by the various grimes and gunks that covered them for years.

I need to get a dry ice blasting rig at some point. That process is amazing.

You know, I think you're right. Thanks for pointing that out.

Now I wish I hadn't taken the accessory drive back apart - I won't be able to confirm this routing until it goes together for real.

Oooh yeah, I would LOVE a dry ice blaster. I just replaced the oil pan gasket on my E39 (not a clean job) and I would have loved to be able to clean that off that way. Brake cleaner is an amazing thing, but the fumes aren't very nice. Or healthy. I tried my best to use alternative methods, but it's so hard to avoid a gigantic mess of grease splatter everywhere.
