Hi all, I'm getting ready to replace/upgrade my exhaust to 3" from the cat back. Keeping the stock downpipe (and catalytic converter) ...for now.
I've got a list of parts I was going to order and probably have an exhaust shop assemble for me (I'm not a welder), but first I wanted to check with the forum and get some feedback, make sure I'm not missing any key components or considerations, and also maybe see if anyone knows how to get a better deal on any of this stuff (I thought I'd be saving money buying components myself but apparently not). All parts 304SS. Without further ado, in order from the downpipe back:
-probably this summit racing flange for $22
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-626002
-this summit gasket for $4
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-116002
-2 bolts (already have a spare set)
-bit of 3" pipe ~$51 (4' is a lot but also enough)
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-640230
-resonator (big one like the Vibrant 1795 or 17950) for $88 or $98 - will the 5" 17950 fit in the tunnel? Someone at the end of this thread fit one, so I'm guessing it does, but not sure how much clearance it has...
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/vpe-17950
https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... ost5994545
-3" round to oval (2.2 x 3.45") summit transition adapter 6" long for $21
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-640300
-2.2x3.45" oval tubing 4' length (should be enough) for $81
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-640310
-summit oval 45deg bend for $51
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-640320
-a second oval to 3" round (2.2 x 3.45") transition adapter 6" long for $21
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-640300
-short piece of 3" round (from section above, no need for more)
-Borla 40943 XR-1 muffler, $155
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bor-40943
-short 45deg 3" round section like this one $36
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-622122
-this AFE clamp-on rolled-edge double-walled tip for $53 (looks ~stock)
* https://www.summitracing.com/parts/afe-49t30452-p09
so...like $593 for all the components...seems like a lot
Anyway, let me know what ya'll think (especially if that 5" diam resonator will or will not fit in the tunnel, I won't be able to measure my car until at least tomorrow). Also, what's a reasonable charge for shop assembly of all this? Thanks all.
-Jimmy

So I consulted with a local shop and they (similarly) advised me to just order the stuff they don't stock, since they can supply the rest much cheaper than buying ala carte and shipping, etc. After measuring the car I went with the Vibrant 1795 resonator (the smaller 4" diameter, my tunnel measured like 5" across, which would be too small for the 17950). Also went with a different tip (this one: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/MBR-T5122CF).
Shop I'm going to is going to use some v-bands at strategic locations so I can swap major components later without too much trouble if needed. Total so far is still about 600, hopefully installation/fitment costs don't crush me.
I thought about the ipd but from reading around and watching comparison vids, I like the borla exhaust note more, just want to keep it a little on the quieter side. Hopefully that 1795 resonator is enough. Will post back with results.

You’re going to have at least as much in Tig welding costs (probably significantly more!) as you do in SS pipe. I would bite the bullet and buy a readymade catback. There’s several available for turbo P2’s. Another alternative (and one of my favorites) is a retired S60R or V70R catback with the resonator replace with straight pipe. $550-700 should get you a decent (new) 3” catback. $40-100 for a used R catback. You won’t have a noticeable gain in oomph until you replace the original DP, though.

So my total out the door ended up just shy of $900, but I got exactly what I wanted (my choice of resonator, ~3.125" oval tube with the Borla XR-1), using some of the parts listed above. Listening to videos, I just didn't like the IPD sound, and some noted a drone with it. That Borla just sounds...nice. Tucks up underneath pretty well, glad I didn't push it too far with the resonator, though that larger one might, maybe fit. Maybe. I also didn't want to trim my bumper, so this way I didn't have to.
Some pics attached. One or two things I would change about the way the shop assembled it, but overall I'm happy with it.
