See my thread on smoothing brake rotors. My pad stuck lightly, left a deposit, causing thumping. I used the Flex-Hone For Rotors to smooth out the rotor, eliminating the thumping. I'm really glad to have this solution.

I have a ton of those battery clamps. You can never have enough spares!

Well I got the S40 figured out. The problem is the steering lock... shocker! The third car now to give me an issue with a mid- to late-2000s electronic steering lock! I pulled it earlier and it decided to retract fully, allowing the car to start. Probably from all the hammering on the shear bolts to remove it from the column. It runs well, I just need to take care of a squeaky pulley, assuming it’s one of the tensioners. I might change the ATF too, it seemed to shift a little slowly on my initial quick drive up and down the street. I’m willing to bet it’s never been done.
I went ahead and cleaned the lock, and removed one of the spring pistons that keeps it locked when the ignition is off. Hopefully cleaning and lubricating it does the trick.

Did I ever say how much I hate this stupid V70R??!??!

So having determined it is unlikely that I can re-flash the DIM unit, or a good used one to work with my car, I have re-instated the original DIM so the car can at least be driven in daytime hours so no lights needed as the new pcb is on back order. We take the car off the road over the winter and I have a list of repairs including a dash repair to do.

Anyway, finished re-fitting the dash, reconnected the battery that has been on charge and put the key in expecting a complete failure to proceed after having a non-compliant used DIM in place.

Sure enough, the flashing arrow of death was still there as was the engine check light. So those codes must be either stored in the TCU and ECU but not the DIM. What I noticed also straight away was all the normal warning lights at POSII were back to normal brightness. Checked the codes and still the same as came on with the used DIM so reset codes.

Switched of ignition, switched back on to POSII. No flashing arrow of death. Started car and all warning lights out. Yay!!!

Then switched on the headlight switch on the 'why the heck not' and everything was fine. No warning lights, lights all working as they should, dash lights on.

So I have the $600 CDN DIM pcb on order that is non-returnable as it is special order. Now, is the issue good now? Time will tell.

Did I ever say I hate this car!!! It is the spawn of Satan!!

Volvo classic can still get them. I believe they get from from gcp.se who bought all Volvo's old parts about 10 years ago. Part is listed as in stock on their website.

Today took the car for a run as I had some errand to do. No issues and regularly tried the lights and all normal so far. I am still suspicious that there may be a battery or cable issue at the root of the problem.

AS I had started the car several times yesterday and ran some OBDII tests I put the battery tender back on at 2A. This normally charges the battery in about 24-36 hours from a low charge and then maintains from there. The battery was showing 100% according to the charger before removing and fitting the -ve battery cable yesterday. Can't believe that after 24 hours it was not showing full charge again? Maybe the charger or the engine earth I use to connect the tender is bad. I use the one at the rear of the engine on the top torque mount. Used it for years and no issues.

This car is weird!

Getting Volvo S40 1998 which been sat since 2015.. brakes now unjammed but just when thought drive it away to new spot noticed alternator not charging. Why i didn’t think of it is because battery light goes off but noticed when car started struggling as its been on without charging already multiple times and some time as i was fixing brake issue.

Positive lead seems okay but gonna tomorrow still make super sure by jumping it and see if jumper wire melts. If its not that then taking alternator off and look more closely what makes such wierd behaviour.

Additional note if rev very high then you get randomly spark shower from alternator (or wire.. i couldn’t ever see exact location due they jump everywhere and dont want put head too close) so something is up.
