After dragging the poor thing out of a scrappers grasp, and throwing lots of time and parts at it, the car was pretty well behaved until just now.
Out of the blue, the arrow went blinky, 0500 on the code reader. I threw a PNP switch at it first from a rumored good spare transmission; when that didn't help, it got both sensors from the same donor, placed one at a time, to no effect. During the refit/resurrection, it got fresh fluid, ca. 10k ago.
I even pulled the trans computer for a look and reseat.
I've ordered the blue box speed sensor, but that takes care of my discretionary budget for the month.
Anybody wrestle with the issue and found a solution I haven't tried yet ?

What other symptoms does the car have with the dashboard arrow blinking? Geronimo has that problem and its owner said the light was blinking for quite a while but "it was not a problem." It doesn't have the 0500 code, though.

Typical 0500 stuff, late shifting out of first on startup, no lockup. Speedo and Odo both work, as does cruise. No ABS or Tracs lights, seems to shift fine once it gets over the initial hesitation.

As Rick says, this is where having codes read makes a big difference. I had issues like this and it wsa caused by 2 different issues.
1) Corrosion of the pins of the TCU. Dealer cleaned with a contact cleaner and reseated the TCU several times to ensure the contacts were good.
2) The ABS module was bad and had a speed sensor signal issue which throws a trans orange light.
I would definitely have the codes read and see what it is telling you as it gets expensive chasing ghosts as I well know!

After checking for corrosion on the TCU connector, check for continuity between the pins, I did and found melted/ shorted wires in the big left to right harness in front of the radiator above the grill. I took the cladding off and found about 7 wires melted together. Separated and cleaned them up, 850 shifted and drove fine from then on. No codes.
Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.
