Spark shower from the alternator... interesting. Sounds like it might be poorly grounded.

I would guess brushes are near end of life and are arcing. Deal with quickly before you kill the alternator “rebuild-ability”

Had a battery light indicator come on a rainy day. Shifted the terminal clamps a bit as stuff can build up even with di-electric grease. Saw a foglight was not working today and when i went under i saw a terminal had been pulled out of the clamp i put int (HID retrofit with projectors into the foglight housings). My guess is water made some bad connections and pulled the voltage down a few times to indicate a battery issue. Refitted the connectors and all is well!

Been trying to find time for projects on the back burner, namely:
-headliner replacement (have a spare headliner ready to go)
-fitting a trailer hitch (got a class 2 for 40 canadian pesos with a hitch, needs tom TLC for rust)
-repainting or protection the front wheel well (bought slighly larger tires and paid the price, no frame rust yet but id rather not start as i want a 5 year lifespan out of the car)
-touch up paint on doors
-replace hood and front fenders (will probably wait till after winter, new ones look mint)

I wish! I just dropped over 10x that on a hitch for my X5. They're not easy to find!

They're normally upwards of $1k on eBay. As soon as I saw this one, I had to jump on it.

Fortunately the E83 hitches are cheaper, less crucial to have OEM as well as far as I know. The problem with the E53 hitch is that aftermarket hitches tend to tear the unibody apart. They don't tie into the bumper reinforcements like the OEM Westfalia-made hitch does.

Yay got alternator out of S40. In the end i was baffled how people have had problems getting it out. Took me 30 minutes and taking it out after moving power steering thingy i just lifted it directly up.

Or maybe as someone changed it to other Volvo model alternator and this is smaller in physical size which is plus.

Worst to me was tensioner as its 15mm and cannot put ratchet there and i wished to have longer 15mm wrench as like i did try first from top.. but the correct place to put wrench (when short at least) is from front of the car directly toward to tensioner horizontally so not vertically and push down.

I removed the AC compressor from the bottom instead of the top. I wish I had just move the power steering pump and alternator. Definitely will do this next time.

On the RN block you have to remove the long M6 bolts that hold the alternator in, but also slacken the lower AC bolts to wiggle the alternator out

You never said that because you don't. If you did, you would not put forth so much effort to conserve it.

My suggestion is to break it down to bite size tasks. Do one task at a time and don't worry about when you going to get it all done. It is something for you to do not something that needs to be done. If you go about it that way, you will get a lot more out of it then a finished car. Smell the Roses ...
