99 S70: removing manual shifter knob

Post by krenekj »

99 S70 manual transmission

I want to replace the shifter boot cover, and need to remove the shifter knob. I've seen various posts that suggest pulling hard, or lifting the boot to release some clips, or twisting. But nothing is specific to or covers the 99.

I really don't want to break anything.

What is the correct way to remove the manual shifter knob on a 99 S70?

Thank you!

There are a couple of versions depending on trim level.

The shift knob on a '99 should be a press fit style. The boot should have a twist-lock, where you can twist it and pull it down. Then just pull up on the knob.
Post a picture of the shifter, since they did change them over the years. The older style is different, and if you try that method you'll break it.

Yup, that's the style I was thinking. Twist the boot off and down, then you should be able to pull the knob upward.

I just did this exact job; caution is urged here, the bits are age-cured and will shatter if breathed on hard. I took the entire shifter assembly out and did it on the bench. Order the ball socket too, it will not survive.

It's worth noting on this later style shift knob does not have the clips like the older one. You won't be able to get to the clips like on those early ones... which are a massive pain to remove!

I’ve got the smooth, grained in leather version on my T5, with the gear pattern embossed in

Yes, it’s beautiful and you can’t have it.

Those are really hard to find. And unfortunately Volvo doesn't even sell most of the shift knob options anymore.
