Opinions on oil

Post by Blacklab467 »

Just wondering what the consensus on what the best oil for my 300000km XC 70 with a 2.5 turbo would be for winter operation. It routinely gets minus 30 Celsius here and the car is often parked outside when I’m at work. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Mobil1 0W40, goes on sale at crappy tire often for about $30 a jug. I like the way my engine runs with it.

Volvo manuals are online at Volvo. For my 2.5T 2006 S60, 5w-30 protects down to -30C, but 0w-40 protects to a lower temperature and also to a higher one. 5w-30 only protects to 86F (+30C) but of course, it is never warm in Canada!

I just googled Volvo S60 2006 owners manual. The oil temp ranges are in the maintenance section:

https://volvo.custhelp.com/app/manuals/ ... UyMQ%3D%3D

The chart for 2006 differs from the one for 2005. I would trust the more recent one.

Canada is a big place  I happen to be at the extreme southern point. We regularly get 30c+ here with humidex in the summer. I can't run 5w30 here but he is likely safe all the way up in Alberta. I just find 0W40 the "easy button" fluid- that way I don't have to stock 2 different types for different seasons. Also I have read about 0W40 being "euro spec" which likely means more on Castrol... of which my 25+ year Volvo mechanic (indy, formerly dealer tech) has told me to NEVER put in my car despite it being on the cap. He says all of the gummed up engines he's seen in his days ran Castrol. I just did my PCV this year (I've put 120km's on this car since purchase in 2015) and I was amazing at how clear my sump paths and oil trap were. I do a Seafoam treatment annually as well, not sure if that actually does anything. Just my 2c.
