That torch picture reminds me of another torch failure of mine. I was cutting a tube with the torch while wearing a frayed jacket. The sparks down the tube ignited the coat. Fortunately, I was wearing leather gloves and slapped out the flames on the jacket. The jacket went in the trash as soon as the flames were out.
Always wear PPE (Personal Protection Equipment). Including SHOES.

I did the same mistake on a Mark 4 VW Golf wagon, luckily my mom noticed a clunking from the rear. I had torqued them down, but I guess they need quite alot more torque than one would suggest.

Just like the wheel bolts on the VW T4s. I know no T4 owner who didn't have them come loose at some point. Honestly, who feels comfortable torquing wheel bolts to 180 Nm ...

I do .. 180 Nm is only 134 ft-lb. Just 34 ft-lb more then I torque Volvo Lug bolts.

And a lot less than the 350ft/lb+ I had to use to remove the lug nuts from my wife's Kia after a visit to the dealer!

How did the bolts like that? I removwd a way overtorqued wheel bolt once and it was basically ripped apart and the lower part was only hanging on with a single thread. Kinda hard to explain, but fascinating to look at.

Surprisingly they all survived. Now the Kia spec for torque for alloy wheels is 69-80 ft/lb!! After that I always checked the wheel lugnuts after a visit and made it clear I would before handing the car over. When it happened again, I stopped using the dealer as that was on top of striping the oil pan bolts and then trying to fudge a repair which only lasted one day before leaving a pool under the car of fresh engine oil. They then tried to blame the dealer I bought it from. I hate that dis-honesty.

If you don’t lube the cam thrust bearings on both the axial and the thrust surfaces with heavy grease, you can take the cam cover off and on six times and the cams still won’t rotate.

Nothing like practice to perfect a task.
The rest of the process should seem routine now.

Until I knuckled down and understood cam flank angle , I had timing belt removal on my T5 down to 6 minutes
