2006 Volvo XC70 Headlight and operation questions

Post by scot850 »

I have to admit failing memory on this issue. We own a 2006 Volvo XC70 which we have had for about 10 years. It was my wife's car then my son's.

I have rarely driven the car in many years but today I was trying to figure out which light was out according to Volvo dealer. They highlighted at the last service that one of the marker lights was out. This has got me confused as I have multiple lights on this car headlight unit and have no idea if it is a regular headlight unit or a Bi-Xenon. How do you tell the difference?

I had my son switch the headlights on so I could check all the lights and figure which one was out. This is what our headlight looks like which would suggest we have the Bi-Xenon variant:

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/183749635878?fi ... Swuopcmpcq

So from RH side of light unit (which for the LH headlight when looked from the front) you have one headlight bulb in a lens. Then to the right of that you have a 2nd headlight bulb. To the right of that there is a small lens which I am assuming is a marker light or a parking light? Then you have a round light which is the turn signal. Now I believe to the right of the turn signal is another small orange light hidden in the orange section. I thought that that was the marker light?

I am assuming these lights are Bi-Xenon as when you pull on the full beam switch the 2nd light moves upward and rotates slightly.

However, what is confusing me is when does the LH light come on? I can't seem to find a way to get this light on either side to work. Does this mean both bulbs are out?

I can honestly say I am seldom stumped on this type of stuff, but as the dealer had supposedly checked all the lights is there an operator error or are my lights not working?

Any guidance is appreciated.

2nd question. The headlamp lenses are really foggy. I have a pair of what I believe are regular headlights from an 06. They have the sidelight built into the larger main lens and don't have the smaller lens to the right of that.

Are these headlight units interchangeable (in pairs of course).

Thanks,

Neil.

See page 141 in the owner's manual:

Looks like the outside bulb in the headlamp set, but I think other bulbs are considered markers, as well.

Turn on the turn indicators to check and identify those bulbs, too.

I have checked all the lights and re-read the manual several times, but appreciate you helping.

I have concluded we have the Bi-Xenon headlights. So the light unit is slightly different to that in the manual. I'll take a run up to the dealer tomorrow to help figure out what is and is not working. I am fairly certain the inner full beam bulbs are not working on either side. Now why this was not picked up in the service is concerning. It is also weird that the bulb out light is not coming on for the headlights. I know it does not work for the minor bulbs and only flashes a warning when a particular circuit it enabled.

Well went to the dealer today and the Service Manager who I know from his days as a good mechanic at the other dealership kindly took time and educated stupid!

So now I know 2 things.

1) Don't test your lights in bright sunlight!
2) How each light on the Bi-Xenon headlight unit works.

So what I learned from this is that the 'inner headlight' closest to the grille, is the daylight running lights in Canada. These only come on with the light switch set to 'O'. I could not see these in the bright light I had through the garage window that day.

The headlights in the Bi-Xenon headlight is the only headlight which moves physically when changing from dipped to full beam and then back on low beam.

It turns out there is actually 2 light bulbs out. We agreed the small light in the outer orange section we are calling the 'Marker' lights.

So the passenger side one is out. The service manager agreed that as a mechanic he hated having to replace those bulbs and particularly the RHS one. He says the only way to do it without removing the bumper and headlight unit was to remove the washer tank filler tube and the ECU/TCU case and a few other parts and even then it is nearly impossible as the rubber seal on the bulb holder almost welds itself in place. Guess it will have to wait until I remove the bumper to polish the headlights. I will swap both bulbs at the same time!
