Hi folks. This is my first official post and I need some repair help.
I have a 2008 XC70 that is having quite a peculiar problem. Recently, my car began cycling through my vehicle messages without any key being pressed. At first it seemed to happen at random, but then I noticed it happened any time I used the turn signal. I also noticed that my gas mileage was really high or low because my trip computer was arbitrarily resetting itself.
Now, the messages cycle almost constantly. It has also started scrolling without me using the scroll wheel. This is a big problem because when it moves through the options to the DSTC toggle, the constantly functioning reset button is turning off my DSTC. This is even worse because I can't get any of the buttons to work to get back to that setting.
In messing with the switch today, I noticed that if I push towards the steering column at the round base of the switch, it cycles the messages.
In scrolling through this forum, I haven't found anything on a repair of this kind for the 2008 XC70, but a lot of folks talk about removing the switches on other Volvos and cleaning the contacts or circuit board.
My question is this: Should I replace the whole switch, should I remove the switch and attempt to clean the contacts/board, or should I do some third thing I haven't thought of?
In any case, can someone provide any kind of a tutorial on how to pull apart this section of the steering column?
You help is greatly appreciated.

Hi there! I know this is an old thread, but I just recently purchased a 2008 XC70, as well. I am also having issues with the turn signal stalk buttons, but mine just simply do not work. I was wondering if you ever managed to solve your issue and how did you do it? Did you end up disassembling the steering column to get it out? What sort of process did you use to do that? Hopefully, you have an answer or two! Thanks!

I saw your other post also and was waiting for someone more knowledgeable to reply. I have no direct ideas for the problem, but have seen similar switch problems solved by careful cleaning. If yours does not work, you have little to lose by trying to clean it. I can't advise how to remove or disassemble, but if you get it apart, use alcohol to clean with a cotton swab.
