Yes. From what I've read there's also a difference in the internal runners as well as in the metallurgy to prevent that cracking.
What I don't know is what years / models the japanifold was used. I don't think it was for long before they went to the " R ".
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

Correct. A buddy of mine over on Swedespeed (ScottishBrick) did a lot of work on this, including flow testing both the Japanifold and R manifolds. I don't remember if he ended up posting results, but I know the Japanifold is better overall.
It was used on 2001-2004 T5 and all 2.4T P2s. 2005+ turbos and all 2.5Ts had the "R" manifold.

👍🏼Power steering rack, have ordered from Detroit axle
👍🏼Replace lousy hose clamps on oil cooler lines
👍🏼Replace cheap clamps on induction path, especially the one on the lower intercooler which snags my belly every time I roll underneath
Turbo control hoses still original, evaluate
👍🏼Change MT fluid, 100k
Replace rusty clutch slave line
👍🏼Rebuild starter...already at auto electric shop

Why is it a Japanifold? This is a Volvo stamped part made in Japan?

Bingo.
The R manifold was made in Japan as well, but the Japanifold came first, so that's where it got the name.

Got the turbo on.
Four mani to Turbo studs
Load coolant return stub hose onto coolant line
Load coolant supply stub hose onto line
Load turbo onto four mani studs, loose nut
SLip in coolant return stub
Slip on coolant supply stub
Clamp Oetiker clamps - need both end on and side on crimpers
Start oil supply line banjo
TIghten mani nuts
Tighten oil supply banjo
tighten coolant banjo.
Intall TCV lines

The tailagate is starting to be empty of project boxes.
