Thanks Rick. Memory is not as good as it used to be but occasionally surprises! Thanks for clarifying!

Found an 850 version of the ECC but it is Canada/EU version in degrees C. Part number 9166549. I'll have to look up if this is an early or late car. It may be the same but with the C rather than F front plate.

Curios as according to this Volvo dealer web-site (and Volvowebstore) they both say the part is NLA but in the part number I gave above they say it fits 93-97:

https://parts.volvounionville.com/p/428 ... 66549.html

I have no idea where this came from as it has been in a box for a long time. I think I bought a bunch of parts from a guy wanting rid of all his spares and this was in it.

You can use a new one in a older model IF you change the wiring harness also. The new wiring harness is for the D+ supply.

In VIDA set vehicle selection to 1997 850. Then go to: Information/ Product Specifications / Other / Body and Interior / Climate units / Table of control modules and power units.

There you will find a table of what works with which model years, chassis numbers ... power units.

Maybe the 850 guys should figure out how to emulate the 850 ECC on a Development Board so be used as a PCB replacement.

So my unit is a 9144256. Looking a little further below in the chart I see a 1995 unit 9166550 having a "size change." Hmm… that doesn’t bode well for a replacement. Yet, going through volvopartscounter.com shows the 9166550 when searching for my 9144256.

Is the -550 a direct replacement for the -256?

If you pull your unit out (have you done this before?), you can measure the front face plate dimensions and width and depth of the rear metal casing. I can compare with the one I have part # 9166549 W637K. It is a celsius face plate but the dimensions should still be correct to that of a F version. Rick did mention a wiring change above.

I’ll pull it out again and measure everything. It’s easy to do. That would be a good reference to archive.

My -256 has the D+ cable so I wouldn’t think I’d need a modified harness as I’d only be getting a newer unit if I can’t match my S/N exactly.

It is size change front panel. No indication of any change in size of the ECC. This need some more investigation.

Your ECC is a unit group #6. Which means you have the D+ supply modification. That rules out unit groups 1 - 5.
