1994 Volvo 850

1994 Volvo 850

I was wondering if anyone knows if I can put a motor from a 1995 850 turbo wagon into a 1994 850 non turbo wagon?If so how difficult would it be and what would be involved? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The motor will bolt in fine , you will have to make sure you get all the accessories

Air filter, snorkel, evap and intercooler are all different or missing

You need a boost valve and hoses.

Finally, your ECU will need to be swapped or tuned to drive the turbo.

Extremely difficult.

Also exhaust manifold and downpipe are different. Basically swap all the big pieces between the muffler and the radiator. The little ones will mostly move over from a 94.

My understanding is that this swap is not really doable. All of the wiring in the engine compartment has to be switched out with the turbo harness. Lots of write-ups on it if you research a bit.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

Does he want to convert his NA to turbo or just use the turbo engine as a NA replacement?
The latter would be easy, just use the NA ECM, TCM, wiring and plumbing. It would have lower compression and less power for a NA but it will run.

Yes you can drop in the 2.3 engine but *I am told* it is not a viable replacement. So much less power as to be undriveable.

Somebody do one and tell us about it!

Must of the time a Turbo charged car is operating as a NA. I would think it would run like a Turbo charged car until you punch it hard enough that the Turbo would spool up, if there was a Turbo to spool up.

The lower compression would let one run the cheapest gas.
