Who owns an EV?

Anyone own a Tesla or other EV? I've never even ridden in one. I don't think I'll even live to the point where they're "everywhere". I'm 51.

I'll likely see to the point where they're 50/50 with ICE cars. That'll be weird, because EV's will be fully autonomous by that time.

100% EVs means traffic will move quickly everywhere: rural, suburban, urban.

I can’t wait for EVs everywhere. You can armor plate them at stop lights and just leave them stranded there like little wind up toys.

Never owned or ridden in one. Judging by those seen on the street, they are about a third as popular as Volvos here in rural Oklahoma. No, our Smart car is not electric.

I have not driven one, and probably never will. The idea of having to deal with a large touch screen just scares me and is generally very unappealing to me. That's a deal beaker for me.

But, it's amazing how fast they are gaining popularity in this area (greater NYC). They are everywhere. Coming back home from Boston last weekend we stopped at a rest stop on the Mass Pike, and all of the 10 Tesla charging stations where occupied.

I think you’ve touched on one of the critical issues - charging infrastructure. The other is the grid and the fuel source to charge all of them. If it’s still coal or an expansion of coal, we’re going backwards.

Exactly! I don't think the general public is necessarily thinking of the big picture. And we are not as "green" as we think.

Countries like Norway are more serious about it though. They get 93.4 percent of their electricity from Hydro plants. The rest comes from Solar and Wind.

A lot of the generated electrical energy gets dumped as waste heat because there is no demand for it as it is generated. One idea is that with EVs charging there will be less waste and the generating plants can run more efficient. More work gets done for the same amount of fuel. Not a complete solution but a step in the right direction. In other words a move toward the ideal load balance.

Another idea is a smart grid. When the grid has excess power it signals the some EVs to start charging. Dumping the excess into the EV's batteries rather then dumping the excess as heat. When the Grid is getting overloaded it signals EVs to stop charging. Maintaining a near ideal load balance.
