2000 S70 radiator core support replacement need help.

Post by beantown »

Afternoon everyone. Deer number 3 and this time it got the radiator core support. There was an article on how to slide out the core support with out dismantling the entire front end. Any one know where it is? Searching for hours with no results. I remember you had to remove both head lights but can't remember the other steps.

Thanks in advance!

It looks like 6 bolts on the two sides and three on the bottom

The cooling group core has to be disconnected ofcourse ( 4 M6) and then the electrical and cable disconnects.

It can be done but with a couple of riders.

If your front bumper is coming off it can be done fairly easily. If not it is a bit more difficult on a 98-00 P80.

If the bumper is staying on, the 98-00 years are more difficult to do compared to an 850 as the 3 lower mounts are hard to get to has they are tucked down behind the bumper. They can be removed with a flat ratchet wrench but it is slow and fiddly if you have large hands and sausage fingers like me!

The other issue for the 98-00 is with the bumper still in place due to those longer lower mounts you have difficult to tilt the top forward enough to clear the front edges of the front fenders.

The job is a lot easier if the front bumper is off. If you are leaving the bumper on, then what I would suggest is wrapping the front undersides of the fender above where the sidelights sit to allow you to remove the panel without damaging the paint.

Otherwise the process is as follows:

Remove the headlights and sidelights. You may know how to do this, but if not then sidelights need to come off first. There is a (fragile) tab between the headlight side and the sidelight that needs to be depressed to allow the sidelight to slide forward to remove it. Be careful as the tabs get brittle with age and easily break off. Once the sidelights are off the headlights can be removed. 3 x 10mm headed bolts on the back that need to be removed. If you have headlight wipers it is possible to remove the headlights without removing them, but I would recommend removing them as it may interfere with the panel coming out.

What I do is spray the plastic headlight arm nut cover with either WD40 or silicon spray to make it easier to get it to flip up. They need to be flipped up to access the 8 (?) mm nut . Hold the arm and undue the nut but don't remove completely. Use a pair of adjustable pliers and put one side on the top of the nut and the other under the arm and a quick squeeze should pop it loose on it splines to allow you to remove the arm after disconnecting the water feed.

Headlights can then be lifted off both sides.

With the lights removed, the remaining bolts on the sides behind the sidelights can removed.

If I recall (been a while) you may have to remove a couple of spring clips hidden up above the radiator for the hood cable. I also recall you have to remove a couple of bolts on the back of the panel holding the radiator and there may be a couple from the front that are hard to access up near the top corners of the radiator hole.

Then the panel can be removed with care.

Hope that helps.

Neil.

ImageScot and Abscate

Thanks for your excellent posts here

I rear ended a vehicle with a bumper higher than my 2000 V70 XC bumper so it was not affected. That caved in front buckling the hood, pushing back the intercooler , radiator and AC condenser, crunching both headlights and turn signals, dog earing both from fender tips and obliterating the radiator support.

Looks to me if I find a parts car that someone decides is not repairable I'll have everything I need to resurrect this sweet Signal Rod (that is what Volvo names that deep red color) wagon.

I put lots of energy into finding installing a used engine, it runs great, it had 70,000 miles only at the time. So I guess I must need another project plus I need an automatic trans car for the day in the future I need a total left knee replacement, will not be able to drive manual trans car for a while.

The posts you two put up are like manna from God.
As seasoned Volvo guys do you have comments about this aside from "find a good psychiatrist".

Will any 98, 99 or 2000 S70 with Vin56 engine have the needed hood, intercooler, A/c condenser , headlights and turn signals and radiator support, ie same parts as this V70 Vin 56??

I've got a new radiator already, some good paint PPG deltron , hood hinges are fine. Engine still rotates free and easy.
The engine did not take a direct hit. It rotates freely but only clicks does not turn over by the starter.

Thanks for your great work

John

9492730 Intercooler is the only one I am unsure if. All other parts are the same.

FCP fitment chart is good, Volvo parts web store is definitive

If the intercooler works in both XC70 and T5 the LPT and HPT intercooler a are the same, sure looks that way here.

I could take the radiator core support of a parts 2000 in my driveway. It might not be crazy to ship , cost wise after the holidays.

Had to check where Los Altos was. Heard of it but couldn't place it!

I have a brother who lives in Santa Rosa. I know there are a couple of Pick and Pull junkyards in the area that seem to have a few Volvos in them. Good place to practice core removal before tackling your own car!

There is also VandSautodismantlers in Sacramento area. Heard good and bad about them. Mostly good.

Good luck!
